I think its important for you to understand that this is a Public, Peer to
Peer, Community Support Forum. Those who respond to postings are
volunteering their time and energy and skills to assist others who may be
having issues. When folks don't respond...it can be for many different
reasons, but trying to "trick" folks in to reading and responding may not
get you the desired results. And trust me when I tell you that there are
other posts that don't get a response.
You say you scheduled a backup using NT Backup. Does that mean you did not
use the SBS BackupWizard in the Server Management Console??
It also most sounds like NTBackup thinks there's a job still running.
You also didn't provide many details about your tape hardware. Personally
I'd dump the tape and go for USB drives

OK I posted a question on the 17th and I must be the only question which
has
not had ANY responses. So I searched and someone had a question with a
heading of S.O.B.!! which had 60 posts!, didn't bother reading it but now
I
believe its all in the hook. My question has nothing to do with S.O.B.
whatever that is, but maybe someone will be kind enough to respond
so..
I have a scheduled backup using NTBackup on a SBS 2003 HP server. it
basically uses the MS script in one of their KB's. But quite often if
fails.
Even though I specify /um at the end, it still requests I mount specific
media. Usually some old media that was used weeks before.
It states "Mount Waiting"
The library is unable to load the media at this time because the drive is
in
use.
then over the top of that it requests
"please place media blah ablah into drive or library unit"
I have a lovely picture showing all this but cannot attach it.
It then requests I stick a tape in that was backed up over a month
earlier.
i.e. on the 18th of June - it requested I stick the tape in labelled the
13th
of May. (each tape gets labeled with the current date.) Surprisingly the
backup has worked MANY times since this tape was backed up to.
Prior to ntbackup being started we restart the RSM service
net stop "removable storage"
net start "removable storage"
and refresh the the drive.
rsm refresh /lf"Hewlett Packard DAT72 drive"
the the backup line
for /f "Tokens=1-4 Delims=/ " %%i in ('date /t') do set
dt=%%i-%%j-%%k-%%l
NTBACKUP backup "@%SystemDrive%%scriptdir%%scriptfl%" /n
"%computername%-%dt%" /d "%computername%-%dt%" /v:yes /r:no /rs:no /hc:on
/m
normal /j "%computername%-%dt%" /l:s /p "%ttype%" /um
Pretty much straight out of MS's own recommendation. Yet I still get
about
a 50% failure rate with the failures produces completely blank logs. Not
even the error "media failed to mount"
I cannot be the only one suffering this problem as I look after 50 SBS
servers and I am sure this is the reason most of them have blank logs
every
now and then. In fact I am sure some of the posts about blank logs for
ntbackup in this newsgroup can be put down to the same issue, only no one
is
around at 1am in the morning to see the media request.
