RE: RIS hangs on Windows XP Setup screen

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi Brian,

Thanks for your reply.

Please try the following steps:

1. If the problematic clients are equipped with some dual-port Gigabit NIC
to install Windows from a RIS server, the problem may occur when booting
from PXE using port-B, but not when using Port-A.

Please check the following KB article:

814788 RIS Installation Stops if the Network Cable Uses Port B of a
Dual-Port
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=814788

2. Please contact the hardware manufacturer to see if there is update for
the BIOS. If yes, please upgrade the BIOS to the latest version first.
(Note: Upgrading BIOS is complicated and could lead to serious problems if
performed incorrectly. Please contact the manufacturer if necessary.)

3. Please use another computer (for example, a desktop computer with
different brands of NIC, Video Adapter and other configurations) to see if
the problem still persists.

4. Please check the permissions on the RIS image and the SIF file are
correct.

If the problem persists, please help me collect the following information:

1. Send me a RIS Full Debug Mode log. Please rename the
%SystemRoot%\Debug\Binlsvc.log file (if existing) and refer to the
following article for detailed steps:

236033 HOW TO: Enable Debug Mode for Remote Install Servers
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=236033

2. MPS Report

a. Visit
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_DirSvc.EXE to download the file.
b. Run the MPSRPT_DirSvc.exe on the server box.
c. Wait for 10~15 minutes.
d. Open Windows explorer, navigate to
%SYSTEMROOT%\MPSReports\DirSvc\Logs\cab\
e. Send the .cab file directly to me.

Please send the information to v-robeli@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with subject:
39715576-RIS hangs on Windows XP Setup screen.

I am looking forward to hear from you.

If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Best regards,

Robert Li(MSFT)
