Re: 2 notebooks 1 server. sbs domain or workgroup. fax forwarding. outlook sync.

Hi Terence Liu,

Thank you so much for replying. I now realize it doesn't make sense to
ask so many questions in one post. I wasn't sure
what would be better, to do multiple posts or just one big one. :)
best intentions not to spam.

* I guess I would be wondering if all these features could still be
applied to a user that is not on the domain?
Or will I be making my self more work in the long run and losing
features. I do not really need all the advanced security premissions
as it's only two users.
* Is there any way to move the user to the domain without
reconfiguring everything? Is there any point to keep the old user?
Moving these two users mean setting up all the software configuration
again which would take more time.
I guess it's not that much work if everything goes smooth, but simple
things like the explorer passwords that I've already imported to the
new laptop and now I will have to do again, I understand that IE 7
doesn't have such a simple feature to export them. and so on...
* If I do move them to the domain, they still download their emails
seperatly or do i setup their email accounts on the domain to download
it for them and then forward it to each computer?

I think the most important part is the outlook and that's where my
main concern is about. spiecally after I see that it is possible to
send and recieve faxes through outlook with software like goldfax that
i'm looking into now that it supposed to work on sbs2003 well.

did all that make sense? :) i hope so.
again a bunch of questions, i'm taking english classes at uni so
hopefully one day my writting will be more tidy then my thoughts :)

kind regards , aaron.

Hello Aaron,

Thank you for posting here.

Please understand that our newsgroup is an issue based service, meaning we
usually respond to one question/issue per post. This will lessen the
confusion for both of us, as well as ensure that our results are accurate
and not a result of a test for a different question. Therefore, I will work
with you on the third question (the big one) in this post (the user account
issue). Regarding the additional question, I suggest you create new posts
for getting more quick assistance.

Note: For the fifth question, I suggest you improve the hardware of the
laptop, and post the question on Vista newsgroup.

According to your description, I understand that you want to know whether
you need to join the client computer into SBS domain. If I have
misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

We strongly suggest you join the client computers into SBS domain.
After you join the client into SBS domain:
You can assign Outlook 2003, Fax client and other useful software to the
clients.
You can access Exchange on SBS via Outlook without input authentication.
You can access the companyweb
You can easy access other resource in domain.
You can control and monitor client from SBS
And so on

Meanwhile, when the laptop out of office, and can not connect SBS, the user
still can user domain account to logon the laptop (by default, there is
local cache for domain account)

How to join clients into SBS domain:
On the client computer, access the web sitehttp://SBSname/connectcomputer/, go through the wizard.

If you want to join Vista client to SBS domain, please install the
following hotfix on SBS:

Windows Small Business Server 2003: Windows Vista and Outlook 2007
compatibility updatehttp://support.microsoft.com/?id=926505

If there's anything else I can do for you, please do not hesitate to let me
know.

Hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

| hi all,
|
| i've been looking around the newsgroups and still couldn't put all the
| pieces together. it looks like i could spend hours reading on the net
| and i was hoping maybe i can get some help to figure out what the best
| plan of action would be.
|
| i've set up a home network for a client.
| she has 2 laptops. one of which she has for one of her employees that
| might at future take it home when my client goes traveling, this
| computer runs xp pro. the other is the owner's, a vista 64. both these
| computers are running on workgroup.
|
| now i've reinstalled her desktop as i suggested it should act as a
| server and i've put sbs 2003. i've suggested to stop using winfax as
| it's too much of a hustle to install it and now she uses the server
| fax. i figured it would offer her more features in regards to
| forwarding.
|
| now i was hoping to create a sync between the outlooks to the server
| so that will be a good way to back up. that way i don't have to worry
| if the outlook is open when i run a scheduled backup and also gives me
| another source of backup when she travels with her laptop, just incase
| something happens.
|
| there's a few issues i'm not sure about:
| 1.do you have any thoughts about the change i've made with taking away
| winfax and putting the server fax?
| 2. how do i setup fax forwarding as an email so that when she goes
| traveling she still recieves her faxes. i don't want her to keep using
| efax, i'd like to use the sbs configuration to forward it to her
| email.
| 3. now this is a big one, should i move her users to the domain? it's
| taken me a long time to set up her user on a workgroup, plus when she
| goes traveling she won't need the domain. there isn't many security
| issues as it's only two users. but i don't want it to get in the way
| of outlook sync.
| 4. would you recommend using the windows backup if it doesn't go over
| 10gb? would you recommend using incremeantal or just copy everything
| over and over again. i ussualy like copying better as it makes me feel
| safer that it's all fresh.
| 5. she complains that her vista is loading a bit too much. her
| computer is top technology with lots of ram. i am just wondering if
| there's any configuration or software i should consider to boost it a
| bit. it's a relatively fresh install of vista ultimate. would you
| recommend using system mechanic or only use it if needed? ( my
| personal pc has tons of software on it and i'm not sure if it's
| because of system mechanic 7 but not long ago i backed up my registery
| and it was more then 700 mb. have you ever seen a registery that big?
| it used to be just a few mbs i thought.)
|
| sorry for the long letter, thank you very much for reading and i hope
| i can hear some thoughts and suggestions.
| aaron.
