I have a problem partly related to this post.
I need to reinstall Outlook 2003 to a client. It was installed &
either lost or unistalled. There is a short cut in the start menu
still, tit reports the link is broken, program is missing. Hence the
need to reinstall.
I can setup the server/ assign applications, etc OK. It instructs you
to go to the client, open IE, type in
http://sbserver/connectcomputer. Same as your instructions @ #3
paragraph.
When I click on the link on that page "connect to network", I get a
message "selected computer is already a member of the domain, no need
to run again". Am I missing something to start the reinstall process
??
Yes - you don't need to rejoin the domain (and you can't, unless you disjoin
first).
Go to Server Management, Client Computers
Click on Assign Applications to Client Computers & click Next
Pick the right computer/add it / next
Click next/finish/whatever, follow whatever steps it needs.
Thanks, Phil

Do you have a reason for reinstalling everything? You can import the
Outlook items from the PST and/or the Archive into the Exchange
Server Mailbox without reinstalling any apps. If you have the
versions you prefer on that PC, I'd leave them and just deal with
the mailbox issues. Here are some reasons:
- unless you find the KB and do a very complete uninstall of Office,
including manually deleting registry keys, Office reinstalls seldom
fix problems. You can run a repair from CP Add/Remove and bring it
up to date with service packs, etc. from Microsoft Update, which
will generally accomplish as much with less work for you and the
user. Issues that are caused by registry entries are never fixed by
reinstalls unless you delete the offending entry in the process
(with the usual precautions about how registry editing causes famine
and plague).
- if you mix Office versions, say by running Office XP with Outlook
2003, all integration between Outlook and the other Office apps is
broken. For example, you can't use Send To -> Mail Recipient to
e-mail out a Word doc or spread***. You can't use Word as the
e-mail editor.
- if you're using MU or WSUS to patch Office, a Local Installation
Source is required to keep updates from prompting for the Office
CDs. That means that Outlook installed from the server will always
require that server installation source for updates or to add/remove
features. This might not be a bad thing, but it can be an
inconvenience if you migrate servers or do something that results in
a version mismatch. (For example I deleted my Outlook 2000 source
from the SBS without realizing I had a user who was still on Outlook
2000. This makes it a real pain to patch that Outlook install).
To do what you're asking about:
1. If you feel that you need to uninstall Office, do that first.
The Office uninstaller will probably not delete any PST files, but
I'd make sure you have a safe copy of those before starting. If you
don't have a good reason for uninstalling Office, I'd just skip this
step.
2. If you do 1, then reinstall Office with everything you want to
include. I'd probably skip Outlook (unselect it in Custom install)
if it's a version of Office prior to 2003. When I have a user with
Office 2003, I install Outlook with Office rather than from the
server. IMO this simplifies patching, especially service packs.
Whatever you install, if you're prompted to keep or delete the
installation files at the end of the install process, make sure you
keep them. This is what keeps updates for prompting for the CDs.
3. Whatever you chose in 1 and 2, if you still need to add Outlook
2003 to this PC, you can just install it from the server. Just go
to the Server Mgmt. Console -> Client Computers -> Assign
applications.... Just choose Outlook, and while you're running the
wizard, click on the advanced options to make sure you're not
pushing out anything else that you don't want to install/reinstall
on the client PC.
So in summary, I would get your Office install to the state you want
it in first, either by fixing, reinstalling, or whatever as
appropriate. If that includes a prior version of Outlook, I would
probably not bother uninstalling it, although you can if you wish.
Then if you did not install Outlook with Office, or otherwise want
to upgrade it to the new version, you can do the Outlook 2003
install from the server last. In my experience, the 2003 install
from the SBS will upgrade prior Outlook versions without any issues.
However, I think that if it detects that Outlook 2003 is already
installed on the PC, it won't reinstall it.
If it's Office 2003, I would

Hi,
I am using SBS 2K3. I have one client that I need to export his mail
folders
and import them to his Exchange folders. I want to uninstall his
Office suite
and then reinstall the Outlook application that you install when you
connect
the computer to the server. How do I reinstall just the Outlook
application.
I will then install the Office suite without installing Outlook.
Problem now
is he has 3 sets of folders, Personal Folders, Exchange user and
archive. Thanks
.
