Re: FTP won't work after reboot

We cannot do that unfortunately. We are a machine shop that has a milling
machine that can only access the server files via FTP:
cannot gain access to any of the files on the FTP site. This is a
huge problem because for one of our machines, thats the only way to
download the files.
Otherwise we would definitely have stopped the use of FTP quite a while ago.

OK then you do not have a problen. Just grant them access the the local
FTP folder. No reason to FTP if your folder is inside you network right?

Yes, any client on the internal network is unable to access the FTP site
when the issue comes up. We have the FTP site only assigned to the
internal NIC so that nobody would be able to access externally.

Please explain this comment............

"Any client computer connected to the server though will not connect to
the FTP site."

Is this an internal network client?

The FTP site doesn't give any errors at all. The only FTP warning that
I get has to do with when the client computers are trying to access it,
it gives a warning saying that the client at host has timed out after
120 seconds. Accessing the FTP site from the server itself works
perfectly. Any client computer connected to the server though will not
connect to the FTP site. The FTP service is started as well as the site
itself is started after the reboot. Once again, I have not been able to
figure this out. As far as the other program being referenced, I was
just giving a reasoning as to why the server has to be rebooted more
often than I would like it to be. Thank you for your timely response
and I hope that this extra information will help in further assistance
with this issue.

Well your main issue is not exactly a subject to post and receive
comments on as this is isolated to that program. It is obvious that
the program does not log a user off if they do an illegal exit such as
just closing to window. Most programs such as the one you have will
reuire the user to leaglly log off thus closing his sesssion and
releasing the licens.
As far as your FTP server is concern if it fails everytime you reboot
then it must be generating event errors. Have you chacked the event
logs for error messages pertaining to FTP?

Hi everyone. I know that I've posted on this subject before but it
seems to have fallen off the map and I was wondering if anyone could
shed any light on whats going wrong with the FTP site. We have a
program that is run through the server that only has a limited number
of licenses and when the program closes out improperly the server
still recognizes the user as being logged on. This causes a problem
with certain pieces of the program to be not accessible saying that
its locked out or all the seats are full. When this happens, the only
way to fix it is to reboot the server and it happens at least once
every couple of weeks.

Well when I reboot the server, the FTP site stops working and we
cannot gain access to any of the files on the FTP site. This is a
huge problem because for one of our machines, thats the only way to
download the files. I have found a way to work around and get the
site back up and running, but it takes up valuable production time.
The workaround consists of disabling RRAS and DHCP and then
reconfiguring RRAS and starting the DHCP service again. I know its
not that big of an issue to go through these steps, but there are
Inbound and Outbound filters that I have set up in the RRAS firewall
that I need to reconfigure each time, and also the FTP site doesn't
always work on the first try.

It would be much appreciated if anyone had any idea of what was going
wrong on the server that would keep the FTP site from continuing to
be available after reboot. In the meantime I can always use the work
around but it would be a lot better to perform preventive maintenance
to keep it running after a reboot. Thanks in advance.
