Hello Hamish,
Thanks for posting in our newsgroup.
Please take the following steps to see if the problem can be resolved:
Step 1: Please make sure the ISP has correctly registered A/MX/PTR records
for you.
1. A DNS "A" record with the host name mail.clientdomain.com, where
clientdomain.com is the name of your e-mail domain. The "A" record points
to the public Internet IP address either of the computer running Windows
Small Business Server or of your external firewall device or router.
2. An "MX" record pointing to the "A" record.
3. A "PTR" record pointing to the "A" record. Only your ISP can create this
record.
You can use NSLOOKUP tool to have a check A/MX/PTR records.
Using NSlookup.exe
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/200525
Step 2: If you have hardware router, please make sure the port 25 is open.
This will allow incoming and outgoing Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)
traffic so Exchange can send and receive Internet e-mail.
You can verify if the port is open or not using telnet command.
More information:
XFOR: Telnet to Port 25 to Test SMTP Communication
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/153119
Step 3: Please rerun the CEICW to configure the network and e-mail
settings. If you have ISA server installed, this wizard will create rule
for SMTP traffic automatically.
To do this:
1. Click Start, click Server Management. Click To Do List and then click
"Connect to the Internet". Click Next, and go through the Internet option.
2. Select Enable firewall, make sure E-mail is checked. Click Next.
3. On the "Web Server Certificate" page, choose to create a new Web server
certificate and then type the public FQDN that you will use to access OWA
(for example, if your public FQDN that you use to access the sites is
mail.domain.com, you should type mail.domain.com as the new certificate
name).
4. In the Email Delivery method page, please choose the correct email
delivery method. If you need to forward internet email to your ISP
Smarthost, please input the Smarthost address correctly. If you use DNS to
route emails, please choose this option.
5. In the E-mail Retrieval Method page, if you use POP connector, please
check the "Use the Microsoft Connector for POP3 Mailboxes" check box, click
Next.
6. In the E-mail Domain Name page, enter your registered e-mail Internet
domain name, (i.e. domain.com).
7. Do the other steps and finish the wizard.

If the problem persists, please let me know the following:
1. The A record of your domain is point to mail.company.com or
lan.company.com.
2. Can you send out e-mail successfully?

2) Run the MPSRPT_Exchange.EXE on the server box.
3) Wait for 10~15 minutes.
4) Open Windows explorer, navigate to %SYSTEMROOT%\MPSReports\Exchange\cab\
5) Send the .cab file directly to me.

<for some time and for several reasons and following advice i have moved
over
<to smtp
<
<this is what i have done so far ran CIEW and used my existing lweb cert
<lan.companyname.com and choose for mail to be handled by exchange i got my
<isp to sort out my mx records and they did this by first creating new mx
<records for mail.comanyname.com and then a new A record for mail then they
<forward that to my isp this from what I know is the right way, currently
<when ppl send me mail it's either getting held for retry or bounced. I
have
<had a friend look at his sbs queue and it is showing mail for me being
held
<saying the server did not respond to the connection attempt
<
<checking wise i have looked and everything seems to be running ok there
was
<an error on the exchange service but that was the mta stacks that are
<disabled by default, i even tried starting that so everything was running.
<
<the only thing that i have come across is when attempting telnet right now
<we have lan.domainname.com set up and have been using it now this is also
<the address we use in the CIEW wizard as web server certicate and the new
<mail.companyname.com that was set up 24hrs ago right now if i ping both
<domains i get the same ip address but when i telnet i can only get in on
the
<lan.companyname.com. it always times when i try the mail.companname.com
<
<now is my fault down to the dns records i cant quite understand why i can
<telnet to lan and not mail even though when i ping them they both goto
