Hi Hamish:

Your post is a little hard for me to read. But, based on the usual
problems with SMTP mail:

In addition to having your isp make the correct DNS records, you must
open port 25 on your router and forward that to the internet connected
nic of your SBS server.

Please post your domain name. That is, if I were to send you email, it
would go to hamish@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx, org, net, biz, or?.

And, if you know it, did your mail server get setup as
"mail.yourdomain.com", or some other designation.

Given that info we can do some checking to see if the error is on the
internet side.

Not that it would keep internet mail from reaching you, but your Local
Area Network should not be named yourdomain.com. Rather it should be
named yourdomain.lan or yourdomain.lan but not yourdomain.com.

Larry

Hi guys this is following on from a previous thread I have been using
pop3 for some time and for several reasons and following advice i have
moved over to smtp

this is what i have done so far ran CIEW and used my existing lweb cert
lan.companyname.com and choose for mail to be handled by exchange i got
my isp to sort out my mx records and they did this by first creating new
mx records for mail.comanyname.com and then a new A record for mail then
they forward that to my isp this from what I know is the right way,
currently when ppl send me mail it's either getting held for retry or
bounced. I have had a friend look at his sbs queue and it is showing
mail for me being held saying the server did not respond to the
connection attempt

checking wise i have looked and everything seems to be running ok there
was an error on the exchange service but that was the mta stacks that
are disabled by default, i even tried starting that so everything was
running.

the only thing that i have come across is when attempting telnet right
now we have lan.domainname.com set up and have been using it now this is
also the address we use in the CIEW wizard as web server certicate and
the new mail.companyname.com that was set up 24hrs ago right now if i
ping both domains i get the same ip address but when i telnet i can only
get in on the lan.companyname.com. it always times when i try the
mail.companname.com

now is my fault down to the dns records i cant quite understand why i
can telnet to lan and not mail even though when i ping them they both
goto same location

any help would be appreciated

Hamish
