Re: Website & EMail

I agree as well, im going to read up on SBS2003 and learn some more about it.
Im brand new to it, so i dont know much but i have managed to get the server
up, get user accounts created and get the intranet website and email going.

But now my boss wants a website and email setup, but he wants to host it on
our server instead of having somebody else host it for a few issues, the main
one is that your bandwith per month is limited, and to get email through
anybody you have to buy extra more expensive packages.

So he asked me if these things can be done on our server, and i know we can
host the website there, not very safe but it can be done, but im not sure
about the email. He already had me buy the domain name, it was $9. And i
used the forwarding to throw it to the IP address of the server, and masked
it so it doesnt show our IP address. I dont know if this is the correct way
to do it, i dont think it is becuase anytime i navigate anywhere on our temp
webpage, the web address in the address bar never changes. Not even if i
navigate out to another website.

If anybody has any helpful information including links to sites where i can
better learn some of the necessary things for setting up the website and
email, please let me know, but for now im going to go use AllenM and Claus'
ideas and see what i can learn and do.

Thank you

I'm in agreement with Claus here. You do not want to host your company's
website on the SBS server for reasons of security. If your going to host
your website and put it in the DMZ then that is viable and a good solution.
If your looking at dollars here think about 120-150 a year to have your
website hosted externally. Many reasons to do this when it comes to money.
The three most inportant ones are hardware, backup and uptime.
I'm not too familiar with godaddy.com whether or not they do email hosting.
I do know you can get a registered domain name for like $6 a year I think
but if they do not do email hosting then why use them. I would lokk at other
ISP that can register a domain name and also do email hosting. Also make
sure they do offer backup servers in case your email server goes down then
all mail gets delivered to them until your email server is back up and
running. Once you've got your email hosting. domain name all figured out
then google the web for smtp exchange servers on SBS 2003. Lot's of step by
step documentation on how to set up your own SMTP Exchange server in SBS.
You can also use POP3 but most peole will tell you not to.

You can host your own website on the server but it is NOT recommended. You
open yourself up to intruders that you really don't want on you main
server. A small glorified desktop will do just fine for web hosting. Just
make sure you put it outside your LAN into a DMZ.

Most of our clients have the site hosted somewhere. It costs about $10 per
month for a small setup and you don't have to deal with the bandwidth and
maintaining the server.

As to the rest of your post, you really need to do some reading and learn
about the SBS server. There is a load of information on the MS site. The
other option is to hire a certified SBS specialist to do the setup.

Im creating a website for my company, but my boss wants me to host the
website on one of our server computers so we dont have to pay some
company
several hundred $ to host it for us. Well first i want to know if this
is
possible, and how.

Second question is email. Im going to get a website through godaddy.com,
and
i want to know if its possible to host and store all the email
information
with the exchange server on our server computer? If thats possible, can
you
tell me how thats done too?

Right now all i know how to do is edit and manage the local intranet
website
and email.. But i dont know how to associate it with a web address on
godaddy.com... Or if its even possible
