RE: Slow file opening after SBS migration

...Beats me,,,since its not the docs themselves but word itself I'm thinking
maybe the normal.dot template could be corrupt. However that might not be the
case.
My next guess is some registry entries might still be containing a reference
to your old server's name. Using Regmon you might be able to find it.
Other than that I have no other idea for now.

Yes thanks, I am familiar with them (process explorer is a godsend!), but not.
really sure how they can be of use in this particular case. Its the name
resolution bit that I think may be the key.
Thanks for the input, any further specifics on how they may help would be
greatly appreciated.

Have you tried the tools from Sysinternals.com which is now part of technet
ever since Microsoft bought it ? If you type www.sysinternals.com the browser
will automatically redirect to the technet site. There you can download tons
of tools. Tools you might find useful in your case are - Process Explorer,
Filemon, Regmon.
Good luck !

I recently migrated an SBS2000 server to a new SBS2003 server (decent spec,
premium with ISA).
The migration went well enough, and all is working as expected.
I am however getting a slow file access issues, particularly when opening
word documents.
These seem quite random - for example you can open 5 in a row at 'normal'
speed, then opening another can take 10 - 15 seconds. (it is not always the
same documents or location).
I have disabled temporarily smb signing and AV (client and server) to no
effect. No clues in the event logs that I can find. In the past I have seen
problem with sbs2000 where both nics are registered in DNS/WINS but that is
not the issue here. Have also tried disable the ext. nic and ISA - no change.
I joined my laptop to the domain to run ethereal and capture a few packets.
The most interesting thing that this picked up was some netbios name request
for 'sbs' - which is the original server (migrated from) name. Quite why my
laptop would be looking for this I have no idea. I can find no reference to
the server name in the word docs, I have even run them through a hex editor
to find any references.
I'm not sure if the name requests are a red herring or not, but it would
certainly seem a reson for the pauses. As an experient I got WINS to reply
with 127.0.0.1 and with the IP of the new server whenever it was requested,
but it didn't seem to make any difference.
Any clues out there?
TIA
Richard
