Re: Connecting Client Computers to a Domain

There's a very simple solution. Log onto the PC using the domain profile
whether you are in the office or not. No domain member should have any
'local' users defined. (actually, Local Administrator always exists unless
it is a DC and I use 'setup' as a local account before joining the domain)
When away from the office the logon process uses 'cached credentials'. This
is limited in the number of logons that may occur before again connecting to
the network but most people connect to the network frequently enough to not
require special handling (the number of cached logons can be increased).
Also, if the user hits the cached logon limit they can elect to 'connect via
dialup networking' at the logon screen and choose their VPN (if such is
available, and it seems it is in this case), at which time the 'cached
credentials' count gets reset (I'm fairly sure), at a minimum this allows
logon for that session.
I'm not sure (maybe someone else knows) but possibly the cached creds count
also gets reset if the VPN connectoid includes 'Logon to domain'.
I do know, I have laptops which spend significant amounts of time out of the
office. They do not have 'local' user accounts.

Hi
I currently have a small server running SBS2003 supporting 4 desktop
machines and 4 laptops all of which were running XP Professional.
These were all configured so that you could log directly into the domain
at
the first logon screen or log directly on to the computer when working
remotely. This system seemed to work fine and I had the shared drives
within
the server mapped to each of the laptops. Once connected via the VPN they
could access all required files.
I have recently added another laptop but it now has Vista Business as the
operating system. I have connected the laptop to the domain and when I am
in
the office I can login and access the network without any problems. The
problem seems to be when I am logged on locally. Although I can see the
network computers I am unable to connect to the server? Has anyone any
ideas
how I can resolve this~??
Any help appreciated
Thanks
Richard
