RE: WINS Cannot read from the UDP socket

Hi

I am having the same problem about WINS but win Windows 2000 Server SP4.

Can you help me?

I have tried the recomended steps on the posts without success.

The users usualy complaint about loosing access to their virtual (network)
disk and the access to the printers (that are installed on the server that
gives the WINS errors).

Thanks,

Hi,

Thanks for posting in our newsgroup.

From you your description, I know that you get Event ID: 4204 "WINS could
not read from the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) socket" at the same time
every day. If I am off-base, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research, the issue is the result of a destination host
unreachable message being sent in response the WINS service Automatic
Partner Configuration function. The default is for a multicast service
announcement to be sent out over the wire every 40 minutes. The feature is
designed to let the WINS servers announce themselves for automatic
replication.

Please modify the registry as following:

Note: Please backup the registry first.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Wins\Parameters
Entry Value Name: UseSelfFndPnrs
Data type: REG_DWORD
Value: 0

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Wins\Parameters
Entry Value Name: McastIntvl
Data type: REG_DWORD
Value: FFFFFFFF

Furthermore, there are also some cases that this issue is caused by Network
Appliance (unknown brand) send the ICMP Port Unreachable back to the server
from the IGMP(mulitcast) WINS packets. You could take these Network
Appliance offline to resolve this issue.

If the problem persists, please select the following information for
further research:

MPS Report:

1. Download the MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE from the following link and then run
this tool to gather some information from the problematic computer:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE

2. Double-click on the MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE file.
[Note] This process may take some time; however, it will not have a
negative effect on the performance.

3. A CAB file will be generated in the
%systemroot%\MPSReports\Network\Reports\Cab directory called
%COMPUTERNAME%_MPSReports.CAB. The CAB file will contain the reports
generated by the MPS Reporting Tool.

Please send the information to v-robeli@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with subject:

Thank you for your time and I look forward to your update.

Have a nice day.

Best regards,
