Hello Lincoln,
Thank you for kind update. And many thanks for Kj's input.
We recommend the customer use SBS Transition Pack to transit a SBS to a
windows standard server. After you install the SBS Transition Pack on SBS,
there will be some wizards to help to transit this SBS server to be a
windows standard server. You can go through the following steps:
Getting Started with the Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 Transition
Pack

For more info about SBS Transition Pack, please go through the following
document:

Hope the info will give you some help.
Please do not hesitate to let me know if there's anything else I can do for
you.
Thank you and have a nice day,
Best regards,
Terence Liu(MSFT)

| Thank you both for your quick responses.
|
| I do apologize, my mind was 10 steps ahead of my typing. Let me provide
| some more information. I will be retiring the existing SBS 2003 server
| (Standard Edition), the SBS applications will be of no importance. They
do
| not use SharePoint, RWW, SBS Backup, and the monitoring features are
easily
| enough setup manually in about 30 minutes. The transition pack, and
correct
| me if I'm wrong, is best used when you wish to keep the existing SBS OS
| intact and retain some of its features such as those that I mentioned...
that
| is, if I understand it correctly. Essentially removing the limitations
of
| SBS.
|
| The SBS server is not version R2, the new server will have Windows 2003
| Server (Standard/Enterprise still TBD) version R2.
|
| I have setup a test environment representing this. This is what I've
been
| able to do thus far:
| 1. Joined R2 server to domain successfully
| 2. Successfully ran "adprep /forestprep"
| 3. Successfully ran "adprep /domainprep /gpprep"
| 4. Ran DCPromo on R2 server and successfully made it a DC
| 5. Successfully synchronized AD
| 6. Successfully transferred DNS
| 7. Successfully made the R2 server a GC server
| 8. Confirmed that R2 server is functioning as a GC by running "NLtest
| /dsgetdc:domainname"
|
| What I know I have left to do at the very least:
| 1. Transfer FSMO roles
| 2. Install and configure Exchange and decide on Exchange data migration,
| leaning towards having Exchange on R2 server join existing Exchange
| organization and moving mailboxes, letting Exchange system folders
replicate,
| etc., etc.
| 3. And of course, in live situation, move folder shares, adjust login
| scripts, move LOB apps, etc.
|
| However, I'm unsure of if I'm missing anything big here and why I was
hoping
| that there was a KB article and/or a whitepaper outlining this procedure.
I
| have these questions:
| 1. Is there a better MS supported method for doing this?
| 2. Order of operations, from where I'm at now in my test environment
| forward. Should I transfer FSMO roles first, and then move data,
Exchange,
| etc, or vice versa - transfer data, apps, and Exchange, then FSMO roles?
| 3. Can I do the server pieces through one night and let both servers
still
| operate together until another night when I transfer data and hosted apps?
|
|
| Thanks again for your time and effort.
