SP2 install slows network

I recently installed SP2 and now the network is so slow, it is painful to
copy files, taking as long as a minute to copy 10 80KB Excel files to a
local drive on a dual core processor pc. My main Excel document is 8MB and
it takes 5 minutes just to open when it used to take 20 seconds. With the
support (32 hours on the phone and easyassist) of MS tech help, a new Intel
NIC, latest drivers installed, network set to 100MB, outboard NIC processing
turned off, in other words, I followed all the steps in the sbsblog, nothing
is working right.
My old machines, upgrades from W2K run better than the new dual core with
original XP Pro installed. There just seems to be some other "under the
covers" thing going on with file management with SP2. I wish one of the
developers who made the mods would step up and address what is going on. I
am going to have to install an additional file server for the client.
Rebuilding the current server doesn't thrill me as there is no guarantee
that I won't still have the same problem after investing the time and
disturbing the client.
