RE: management console partly not working

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi George,

Thanks for posting in our newsgroup.

From your description, I know that when you open Server Management console
and click Backup or Monitoring and Reporting, you get "the page cannot be
found". If I am off-base, please don't hesitate to let me know.

First, I noticed that both Backup and Monitoring and Reporting have the
problem. Please understand that our newsgroup is an issue based service,
meaning we usually respond to one question/issue per post. Since we're not
sure whether these issues are related, I suggest we focus on the first
question (backup issue) in this post. If the 2nd problem persists after we
resolve the 1st one, please open a new post here for further discussion.

Please try the following steps:

Step 1: To resolve this problem, set the loopback IP address for the
default Web site in IIS. To do this, follow these steps.

Windows Small Business Server, Premium Edition

Note Typically, Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server is
installed and the default Web site is bound to an internal IP address and
to the loopback address in Windows Small Business Server, Premium Edition.
Additionally, a host header is typically not assigned to the loopback
address in the default Web site.

1. Click Start, and then click Server Management.
2. In the console tree, double-click Advanced Management, and then
double-click Internet Information Services.
3. In the details pane, double-click ServerName(local computer).
4. Double-click Web Sites, right-click Default Web Site, and then click
Properties.
5. In the Default Web Site Properties window, click the Web Site tab, and
then click Advanced.

Note Make sure that the internal IP address is listed under IP address and
is bound to port 80.

6. In the Advanced Web Site Identification window, click Add.
7. Under Add/Edit Web Site Identification, type 127.0.0.1 in the IP address
box.
8. Type 80 in the TCP port box. Leave the Host Header Value box blank.
9. Click OK three times.

Windows Small Business Server, Standard Edition
-----------------------------------------------------------------
To resolve this problem, remove the host header value. To do this, follow
these steps.

Note Typically, Internet Security and Acceleration Server is not installed
and the default Web site is bound to the All Unassigned IP address in
Windows Small Business Server, Standard Edition. Also, the host header of
the default Web site is not assigned to the All Unassigned IP address.

6. In the Advanced Web Site Identification window, click Default, and then
click Edit.
7. Make sure that (All Unassigned) is entered in the IP address box.
8. Delete any host header name that is in the Host Header value box.
9. Click OK three times.

Note If you must assign an IP address and a host header to the default Web
site, add the IP address 127.0.0.1 with port 80 and leave the Host Header
value box blank.

More information:

You receive a ?HTTP 400 - Bad Request" error message when you try to use
the Monitoring and Reporting snap-in or the Backup snap-in on a Windows
Small Business Server 2003-based computer
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=842693

Step 2: Based on my research, this issue can occur if the task "Back Up
Small Business Server" is deleted manually from Control Panel -> Scheduled
Tasks.

If you do not want SBS to backup the server, please re-run Backup
Configuration Wizard (Server Management -> Backup -> Configure Backup) and
select "Do not use Small Business Server backup". If you want the backup,
then select "Change existing backup settings" to let the wizard to recreate
the task.

Select "Do not use Small Business Server backup" will change

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SmallBusinessServer\Backup\Backup
Configuration to 2.

Step 3: Check whether the backup job runs under other accounts then SYSTEM.
The service running the backup was set to a user account instead of System.
The website ran as Network Service. Network Service and the user account
had different date/international format settings. To resolve this issue we
set the backup job to run as System which had the same date format as the
Network Service. Additionally, the dates contained in the Backup
Results.xml needed to be changed to match the date format of the Network
Service, which was the US format.

So I suggest that we check the following:

1. Click Start, point to Control Panel, point to Scheduled Tasks.
2. Under the lists of Tasks, right click "Back Up Small Business Server"
and select Properties
3. On the Task tab, verify the "Run As" option specifies NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM

If the problem persists, please help me collect the following information
for further research:

1. What important change did you made before the problem first occurred?
2. Does the SBS backup work OK?
3. What's the result when you open http://servername/backup?
4. MPS Report

a. Dwnload MPS report tool from:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE
b. Run the MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.exe on the server box.
c. Wait for 10~15 minutes.
d. Open Windows explorer, navigate to
%SYSTEMROOT%\MPSReports\Setup\Reports\cab\
e. Send the .cab file to me.

5. IIS Metabase:

a. Download the IIS Resource Kit tools from the following page:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=56FC92EE-A71A-4C73-
B628-ADE629C89499&displaylang=en
b. Install it, run MBExplorer (Metabase Explorer)
c. Right click the "LM" node and choose "Export to file".
d. Specify a file name, specify the password and finish the export.
e. Send the file and the password me.

Please send the information to v-robeli@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with subject:

I am looking forward to hear from you.

If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Best regards,
