Re: Exchange Trans log files w/sbs

Thanks, if I just wanted to backup the Information Stores and Exchange do I
deselect the
other drives or will it prompt me for what I have to backup?

No problem Terrence. We've all been there. (most of the time I feel like
I'm in a constant state of learning with this stuff). ;-)

The SBS Wizard is designed to backup everything on your SBS server
(including the System State and Exchange) to your backup media. The
"wizards" in SBS provide a "no brainer" or "highly automated" approach to
administering most of the SBS server.

Here are some links to SBS online references..

Thank you. While running the wizard is there a place to specify the
Exchange
server or does it do it by backing up the drives specifically. I
apologize
for my ignorance, but I'm learning.

Hi Terrence,

You need to do "online" backups of Exchange to "commit" the logs (which
will
then remove them from your server). This requires that Exchange's
Circular
Logging be turned on and that you run an "Exchange aware" backup program
like NTBackup. The easiest way to accomplish all this is to run the SBS
Backup Wizard:

Server Management | Standard Management | Backup | Configure Backup

This will configure not only your backups (including the Exchange
Information stores) but will also turn on Circular Logging. Then
whenever a
backup runs, it will commit the transaction logs.

I hope someone can help with this. I'm new to the MS world, AS400, and
can
not get rid of a large number of "xxxxxxxxx.log" files under the
MDBDATA
folder. I tried running NTBACKUP and only selected the MS Information
Store
thinking that would get rid of them, but it didn't . I'm running SBS
2003
and I've gone through the MS update to ensure I have all the latest
patches.
I also have done the DST fix.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
