On our network I have windows firewall turned on, on both my small business server and my windows xp workstations. I have installed Microsoft Office which comes with outlook. I want outlook to connect to my exchnage server and send messages using exchange. The emails will only go to the intranet email address. I can make it work fine when i turn off the firewall on the server, but I want to do it with the firewall on. I have made exceptions for port 25, 53, 80, 88, 123, 135, 389, 443, 444, 3268, 4125 already before trying to get exhange to work with outlook. Based on an article I read about all the ports that exhange may use I also tried making exceptions for ports 110, 119, 143, 379, 390, 465, 563, 636, 619, 993, 995, 3269. It did not work. I have come to the conclusions that there are some random ports being used.
Does anybody have any idea if I missed some ports or if there are any random ports being created how I force them to use a defined port.
workstations and the server's LAN NIC, because there isn't any point.
All of the ports used by workstation and SBS must be open to each
other, so there's nothing left to protect. The XP firewall will deal
with this automatically, and the SBS does not operate a firewall on
the NIC used to communicate with the workstations.
First of all, what is the problem? You mention not being able to
send mail outside the network, and also not getting Exchange to work
with Outlook. Which is it, as they are two completely separate
issues? If internal email is working, then Exchange *is* working
with Outlook. Sending mail outside the network is entirely a matter
for Exchange, nothing to do with Outlook. The only port Exchange
needs open to the Internet is 25, and then only for receiving mail,
not sending it.
How is your network organised? One or two NICs in the server, SBS
Standard or Premium with ISA, what type of Internet connection
device?
Could you also post the output of the ipconfig /all command, run
on the server and a workstation?
