Re: Expanding Array

I'm sorry it isn't very cheap. I was looking at the workstation software.
The server is $500. Not so cheap.

Perhaps I will just write off that 5 GBs of space.

Thanks for the quick response Charlie.

Why is not generally recommended on the system partition?

With Acronis would I have to reformat the hard drive and start from scratch
or would I be able extend the partition? Acronis Disk Director seems to be
pretty cheap so perhaps I will try that as long as I don't have to reformat
the drive.

I'm only adding 5 GBs of space to that partition. I currently have 3 GBs
free on it and don't anticpate putting anything else. So it worth the
trouble?

you can convert the C: drive to dynamic by right clicking on the drive in
the left side of the disk management pane, not in the part where it shows
the partition. But it's generally not recommended on the system partition.
That being said, many third party tools such as Acronis Disk Director will
allow you to expand the partition without changing it to dynamic. I've used
Acronis for this on a system where I made a bad choice of original size.

We currently have an SBS 2003 SP1 on a HP Proliant ML350 G3. Please bare
with me this is my first time with an array system. But I do have a good
backup so if I messed anything up I would be able to restore.

We currently use 3 out of the 6 slots in our bay area for hard drives. We
have 3 18.2 GB Ultra320 SCSI hard drives. I puchased three more and I'm
looking to expand the array.

We have a RAID 5 currently with 2 partitions C and D. HP has software
which
allows me to add another hard drive in the next slot and interact with the
array while everything is up and running. Pretty cool!!!!!

So I've added one hard drive and I've extended the array. After that I
was
able to extend each logical drive (C or D or both). So I added some space
to
the C drive just for spare room. We don't usually put anything on the C
drive just system files, OS..etc. And added the rest of the space to the
D.
Once everything was finished I looked in My Computer console and there was
no
change in size on either C or D so I restated the server thinking that
would
refresh. But still no change.

I opened Computer Management Console I noticed the added space was
unalocatted on both C and D, but was still there.

So here is my problem. I noticed the C Partition is a Basic Disk while
the
D Partition/Volume is Dynamic. Since the D is Dynamic I'm able to extened
the Volume with the unalocated space. But since the C is Basic I don't
have
that option.

When I was reading about the difference between Basic and Dynamic disk I
noticed that apprently you can convert Basic to Dynamic. But I'm unable
to
find how to do that. When I right click on that Partition I don't have
the
option to convert to Dynamic.

So my question is should I even try and figure out how to convert it, or
is
it even possible?

Or are there any other options or what is best to do in this situtation?
Thanks for any advice...

Thomas
