SBS 2003 - aarich errors and server slows to a halt

Hope someone has some thoughts here. Have a SBS2003 box that just started
(last Thursday at 12:10pm) come up with Event.9 aarich errors in the event
log.
"The Device \device\scsi\aarich1, did not respond within the timeout
period."
If left for too long, about 20mins, the server grinds to a halt (mouse works
and keyboard CAPS/NUMS work) but nothing else. Also when attempting to
shutdown/restart the server it hangs on a grey screen after "Windows is
Shutting Down" disappears.
The machine is an IBM x206 with onboard Adaptec SATA RAID. 2 IBM supplied
(WD) drives configured in a mirror.
IBM have supplied new (old) drivers but problem is not resolved.
After trolling the net come across comments that someone was having similar
problems with a large database on SATA mirrorred drives. Mmm Exchnage is a
database so disabled all the exchange services. Restarted the server (no
hanging on the grey screen) and no more errors in the event logs. Restart
Exchange and the errors start again after about 10 minutes. Antivirus is
disabled at this stage and the server is actually off the network. Exchange
is just under 6Gb, surely SATA RAID can handle this sort of size?
One last comment. the RAID starts rebuilding each time we manually turnoff,
obviously there are services still running in the background.
regards
Andrew
