Re: DOS Client on SBS 2003

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Hi Nathan,

Thanks for posting here.

From the description, I understand the issue is that DOS client cannot
access shared resource on SBS server. If I am off base, please don't
hesitate to let me know.

Let us refer to the following steps to troubleshoot the issue:

I performed further research regarding Windows Server 2003's authentication
system comparing to Windows 2000. It has a lot of security improvements so
it requires high security on the clients for authentication. I believe this
is why the DOS client is unable to be allowed to access the share.

We can try to lower down the Windows Server 2003 authentication system
security so the clients with low security are able to connect.

1. On the SBS 2003 computer set the following two registry keys to 0 (zero).

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA\LMcompatibilitylevel
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA\RestrictAnonymous

2. Disable SMB signing on the SBS 2003 server.

Disable SMB Service signing on the Default Domain Controllers policy on the
Domain Controllers organizational unit, and then link this policy to all
organizational units that host domain controllers.

Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local
Policies\Security Options\Microsoft Network Server: Digitally sign
communications

Please refer to the following KB article
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811497/en-us

3. Restart the computer.

Thus, the authentication security requirement for the SBS 2003 server is
lowered and you can try to connect to the share again. Please make sure
that you have both NTFS permission and share permission to access that
folder. Please be advised that this will lower the SBS server security
level.

Hope this helps,Furthermore,DOS client are not supported any more. Thanks
for your understanding.

Have a nice day!
