Re: Slow Network with New SBS 2003 & Old XP Workstations

I don't have any real users with non-migrated profiles, but I don't think it
is a user issue. For example, at one point today, I restarted one of the
workstations and logged on with the domain admin account. This obviously did
not have any migrated settings. After a few minutes of me checking various
things, the system froze when I tried opening a command window. It can take
hours for the problem to show up on any one machine, so it is hard for a test
user to really know for sure.
I had uninstalled Webroot Spy Sweeper and Symantec Client Security before
removing the workstations from the other domain, and I have not yet installed
our new AV software. So I suppose it could be a virus. But I can't recall
ever having a virus in our environment that didn't come from e-mail, and we
filter e-mail for that.

I don't think DNS is a problem, and dcdiag and netdiag don't show
anything that looks unusual to my untrained eye. The one dcdiag test
that fails is related to intersite messaging, and we have only one
site and one DC. I've posted ipconfig, dcdiag, and netdiag results
below (with domain name & external IP replaced).
Intersite messaging error is normal and expected in your config. All looks
clean to me and I would have gone with the SP2 vote too had I noticed it and
if not for that one newly built workstation without the problem.
So, perhaps some other software installed on the old workstation not on the
new one. Old group policy settings, firewall settings, antivirus, ???
Does a new user with a new (non migrated) profile also have this problem?
Note that the SBS server has 2 NICs, one with a public address, one
for the LAN. We are running ISA server 2004 with SP3, but I've
disabled it at times with no effect on this issue.
Offline files were enabled, but I don't believe anyone ever used them
(or knew how). Most users use roaming profiles which I know can take
a long time to load on a new workstation, but we have the same issues
with users with only local profile (or even local Admin account).
Users with roaming profiles can use the clean workstation (i.e. set
up from scratch) without issues.
I asked MS support about uninstalling SP2, and they didn't recommend
it (of course). I hate to mess with the server if it is running okay
and it's just a problem on the old workstations.
We had already disabled Receive Side Scaling (RSS) because of an
earlier issue, and disabled any TCP offload functionality while
trying to solve this problem. I also updated NICs on both server with
newer Broadcom drivers from Dell. Microsoft tried changing other
advanced properties of our network adapters (such as speed & duplex),
but nothing made a difference.
References to old servers and domain name are all gone now, and
seemed to be mainly two areas: installer locations (pointing to our
"software" share), and printer setups. I changed these to point to
new locations rather than simply delete them from the registry.
I'll try the suggestion of monitoring workstation with task manager
and see what that yields.
