Re: Registry entry

It's not every month, nor is every available patch critically applicable in every case - it depends on the particular environment. You need to determine what vulnerability is addressed by each update, and what your exposure to it is.

That's why I say weeks, if not months - what's critical in some circumstances isn't in others, and in that case the installation can wait until there is something that warrants a restart. The most reliable installations are the ones that aren't updated or restarted for long periods of time, a.k.a. running smoothly ;-).

WSUS doesn't change things for the worse, rather it improves by providing better management of updating.

Hi Les,

I know that you are a MVP and that SBS's should be running forever.
There's just one thing that takes the air out of that balloon.
Microsoft WSUS ;-)

Funny you should mention windows updates. That *is* when my servers and the one's we manage *do* get restarted. However, those are scheduled usually late at night on a weekend *after* backup runs and before anyone expects to be using it. Weekly is as often as that happens even with a critical update released in in between batch Tuesdays. Usually it's just once a month.

Daily? Nah. There's got to be a better solution to the issue you are having. Why can't you maintain an internet connection without such drastic measures?

Hi David,

Yes, there are ways to cause a server restart, but surely there's a
better way to tackle the problem ;-). SBS should run for weeks, if
not months, without being disturbed. Daily restarts will stress both
the hardware and software.

What's the problem with the internet connection? Perhaps placing a
router between the SBS and the internet device, with the router
configured to keep the connection up, will do the job?

I don't know what Hamachi or VPN have to do with the problem, or
solution, perhaps you can elaborate some?

Is there a way that I can make a registry entry to reboot a SBS 2003
server every night to maintain an internet connection?

I monitor a SBS2003 server that is losing an internet connection
every day. I am using Hamachi to VPN and make changes as needed.

thanks
