Hi,
Thanks for positing in our newsgroup.
From your description, I know that you get Delivery Status Notification(Delay) information to some companies sometimes. If I am off-base, please
don't hesitate to let me know.
This Delivery Status Report is generated if the Exchange Server cannot
deliver a message in a period of time. This can be configured in the
properties page of the SMTP virtual server:
- Open the Properties page of the SMTP virtual server.
- On the Delivery tab, please check the "Delivery Notification" list.
If the destination server cannot be found or not responding, Exchange
Server will send a notification to the sender in the period of time which
is configured in "Delivery Notification". Please rest assured that it may
be a normal activity if the problem only happened once.
Since this issue only happens on some specific email address, I suspect
that it may be a problem on the recipient side. When Exchange Server tried
to send emails to an Internet recipient, it will first contact the
destination server. If it failed, it will retry several times until it
meets the delay notification. After you receive the delay notification, it
will then retry until it meets the expire time. By default, it is 2 days.
Then the NDR will be sent out. If we never received an NDR, the message may
have already been delivered out.
Regarding why you receive the delay notification, it may be caused because
the destination server has not responded at that time, so your Server
cannot communicate with it. I do not think it is caused by your server
since other emails are fine. Otherwise, all emails will receive delay
notification.
Hope the information helps.
If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.
Best regards,
Robert Li(MSFT)
