SBS2003 R1, SP1, PremiumThe Server R2 is fine for TS...and you don't want to put TS on a DC
We wanted to test out terminal server using the 180 day trial of Server
2003 R2. I downloaded the trial and the MS TS deployment doc for SBS and
googled a bit but have a few questions:
1) Are there any issues with using the Server 2003 R2 version for the
member server PC running TS with our SBS R1 platform. I would rather not
upgrade our SBS R1 server as it runs flawlessly. (or do I simply not
install the 2nd CD of the trial to stay at "R1"?)
You're given a number of "guest" TS Cals for a period anyway...just don't
2) For the trial would we need TS licences right away? Sounds like it
allows unlimited access during the trial period.
expect the entire company to be able to connect
3) Anyone had any luck with the website used to get free TS licences for
"grandfathered" XP licences
(http://licensecode.one.microsoft.com/transition). It just hangs for me
after entering the keys -- I gather it is just busy?
4) I gather that the trial shouldn't cause any issues with our working SBS
server or user PC's even if we abandon it later on or go ahead with a real
install to a new TS hardware? It should simply be a matter of removing
and adding the server accounts and/or TS apps?
The important thing is to pull the trigger long before the end of the
expiration dates
5) Any "SBS world" ideas on the hardware required for TS? The MS doc on
sizing the TS box seems to imply with 10-20 users practically any modern
hardware will work fine. Should I be looking at CPU power over disk I/O
for TS? Any recommendations for 10-20 users?
Remember that your TS is doing all the processing stuff: Lots of RAM (4GB)
and consider separate spindles for OS and Raid 5 for Data/Apps
are these 10-20 users remote? or on the LAN and you're just wanting to
standardize configuration
Any other hints/info for using terminal services in SBS wqould be
appreciated. Thanks.
