Let's start with the basics...I assume you are going to totally(snip)
decommission the server, correct? If so, start with copying user
emails to local pst files and signing up for Live Office.
Thanks. Check. That's obviously part of the plan.
Be sure to then copy data over to one of the PC's and change theI'm looking for a summary of how to cleanly detach those machines from the
roaming profile to local for the one user. From there, make sure each
PC has local AV and other software such as anti spam, etc... Pull
down the SBS box and move the PC's over to a workgroup, peer-to-peer
configuration and create the needed shares.
server without losing access to the My Documents data and stuff like
Favorites. Right now they can't even log in if the domain server is not up
and running, or are limited to log in to the local admin account which does
not have access to the goodies.
You can then decide whichCheck. I'm also looking at offline backup (nightly incremental) for the most
files you want to upload to Office Live as you probably won't need
them all there. I would also recommend a 500 GB back up drive on your
newest PC with the data (make sure it has USB 2.0 and not 1.0 - the
backups will take too long otherwise.)
critical stuff. We're already doing offline backup for the most critical
(accounting and contacts); just need to switch a few things around so the
process keeps working under the new order.
I guess the biggest question is why Live? Why not just a peer to peerThe "good old" big hosting service that is running the web site and
network with shares? If she has a website, they sould offer pop
accounts, which can be downloaded using Exchange. I have several
small, small clients that are doing just this. We set them up with
blackberries for remote email..and 1 user with GoToMyPC for remote
access if needed. It works for what they want/need.
frontline POP3 server right now is of course a viable alternative especially
with Outlook at the front end. They're pretty good at filtering, but too
much spam and the occasional malware still make it through; I would expect
that Live might have better filtering. Also, the idea of having a managed
backup for the mail and CRM data on a heavy duty server is attractive. Also,
the CRM and limited collaboration features of Live are of some interest. All
in all, the cost is within the same ballpark. But I'm not entirely sold on
Live yet... the reviews are a little mixed, especially in the usability
area. At this point, something like a Windows domain and the attendant
administration and support is overkill for this small business. OTH, simple
peer network is something that many people do understand very well, so
support would be easy to get.
BTW, I've been working in the software industry for 20+ years, have designed
and built products that have actually shipped in a box, and I think I have a
realistic perspective about the reliability, usefulness or cost of such
things. Today's Microsoft bulletin about Exchange and the ominous
consequences of not applying Exchange SP3 should be a wake-up call for those
who don't believe in applying patches "because it works." It's only a matter
of time before the baddies will be ringing that bell...
