Re: Moving SBS 2003 to new SBS 2003 R2 Server w/new domain

Hi Sarah, there are options.

1. You could flatten and re-install with the new domain name, and then restore data.

2. You could use the MS ADMT to migrate to new hardware. (which requires a new domain - which is what you want).

3. If you don't mind retaining the local (private) domain remain XYZ.local - you could use Swing Migration to migrate the existing domain to new hardware. Remember, nobody will ever see this XYZ thing except internal users - the world will know you as ABC.

1. is the cleanest, and probably the most work.

2. is documented and supported by MS, and somewhat less work than 1 depending on the number of users/computers you have - as it attempts to migrate those.

3. is clean and supported by www.sbsmigration.com, and is far less work either of the above and can be done over time, while the existing server is still online - but you retain the existing domain name.

Greetings!

I am searching for information and hope someone can help.

We currently have an SBS 2003 server using xyz.com domain. The XYZ
company has just purchased another company in another location and
will be changing its name to ABC.

I need to move the current SBS 2003 xyz.com server to a brand new SBS
2003 R2 server abc.com server. The current server will then be passed
onto the other location.

Therefore I need to have 2 new abc.com servers, one at each location -
one will be SBS 2003 R2 and the other will be Windows Server 2003.

I am trying to plan how to migrate the current server and old domain
to the new R2 with the new domain.

Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

Sarah in Jacksonville, FL
