Re: Migrating off SBS to Microsoft Live Office

I'm just about to give up on SBS2003. Every patch seems to introduce more
problems. Now it refuses to start correctly and launch the TrendMicro Master
Service. But that's the the main point. The main point is that I have to
give up for health reasons. In a few months (maybe weeks) there is a good
chance that I will not be around anymore to manage and fight with the
SBS2003 server for my wife's very small business. It is a very small
business with 4 users, using mostly Outlook with Exchange, and other Office
applications Very limited use of roaming profile for one of the users. We
never warmed to SharePoint and never got satisfactory performance out of it
anyway (1.33GHz CPU, 2GB RAM). The IT budget is minuscule, definitely not
enough to pay for 3rd party professional services especially since the
required functionality is so limited.
So, I'm looking at migrating them to Office Live. For $19.95/month, make the
email server management someone else's problem. The question is then, how
can I do this seamlessly without losing email in the process, and without
losing the workstation functionality? What I can see I would need to do stop
Exchange so that it does not pull any new messages until the migration is
done. Also copy any data files we need out of the domain administered
profiles, then detach the computers from the domain, then activate the
domain name with Office Live, then set up Outlook to get email from Office
Live. What else do I need to watch out for? I only have a few weeks to
figure this one out...

Let's start with the basics...I assume you are going to totally
decommission the server, correct? If so, start with copying user
emails to local pst files and signing up for Live Office. This would
be a good chance to archive older emails and clean out deleted and/or
mail you really don't need, as well as removing any large attachments
as well. There is a Live Community board that may handle your
migration questions more readily at http://boards.live.com/officeliveboards/board.aspx?BoardID=752

Be sure to then copy data over to one of the PC's and change the
roaming profile to local for the one user. From there, make sure each
PC has local AV and other software such as anti spam, etc... Pull
down the SBS box and move the PC's over to a workgroup, peer-to-peer
configuration and create the needed shares. You can then decide which
files you want to upload to Office Live as you probably won't need
them all there. I would also recommend a 500 GB back up drive on your
newest PC with the data (make sure it has USB 2.0 and not 1.0 - the
backups will take too long otherwise.)

I guess the biggest question is why Live? Why not just a peer to peer
network with shares? If she has a website, they sould offer pop
accounts, which can be downloaded using Exchange. I have several
small, small clients that are doing just this. We set them up with
blackberries for remote email..and 1 user with GoToMyPC for remote
access if needed. It works for what they want/need.
