Re: RWW and Sql Enterprise Manager

I understand how you feel as I was a developer myself. But security is of
utmost importance. If you are simply looking at managing these SQL Servers
remotely, let's say a SQL Server inside a SBS domain, RWW should work fine.
It's just like running secure RDP on the remote machine. Or, have a VPN
connection and run an RDP session on the remote machine and run Enterprise
Manager from there. Opening ports to manage remote SQL Servers from a single
Enterprise Manager instance is not recommended on an unsecured network
connection.

Thanks for the tip on webbased managers, I didnt know they existed,
will have a look- if they work SQL 2000/2005 then great!

So under a straight RWW configuration it is impossible to use Ent
Manager?
If you open up the extra ports then it is possible?

Security: I'm the developer supporting a remote site, so with other
sites and a VPN, we open the ports, do the work then close them. There
is really no other way or have I missed something?

I won't do that for security reasons but just in case, check your firewall if
it is allowing port forwarding to 1433/1434 - both inbound and outbound.
Again, this is very risky. Have you tried using ASP Enterprise Manager?
There's one from SourceForgehttp://sourceforge.net/projects/asp-ent-man/

and an unsupported one from Microsofthttp://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c039a798-c57...

Hi All,

Can I log on to my SBS 2003 Premium server and use the server SQL
Enterprise manager to also register my remote SQL database (to enable
data transfer etc)?

Have tried but cannot seem to get access, I know a full VPN works....
