Re: Please help with small DHCP question

I noticed in the properties under DHCP that under the tab for DNS, the enable
DNS dynamic update checkbox is "unchecked".
Shouldn't it be checked and one of either "Dynamically update DNS and
pointer records if requested by DHCP clients" or "Always dynamically update
DNS when A PTR records"
Nothing is checked off on this tab.
Thanks,
Greg

rather than manually adjusting the entry you should delete the entry and.
either renew the IP at the workstation or restart the ws, see if dynamic
updates correctly handles the process.
Manual adjustment compounds the problem. It will now work until such time as
something changes, by which time you'll have forgotten where to look :-)

Thank you,
I got it to work by changing the computername01 to 192.168.16.26 in the
dns
and creating a new pointer. Will I have to do this all the time? I'm not
sure
why it happened. It all started when users who logged in via
https://mail....
and tried to conect to their desktop computer, only some would work. The
ones
that didn't work had the DHCP and DNS problems you just helped me correct.
Thanks for your help

the workstation is getting DHCP from the server so should be fine but
check
the DNS console on SBS for stale records in either the forward or reverse
zones. WINS is also worth checking.
If stale records exist just delete 'em.
If dynamic updates are enabled (should be, default) and are failing you
should have log messages on either the client or the server.

the IPconfig from an effected workstation may be helpful.
From the sounds of it the printer is operating as a DHCP source, bit
odd.
A
sign that there is another DHCP source on the network would be that
SBS
DHCP
shuts down, this is a process known as 'rogue detection' and is
enabled
on
SBS by default.
getting the 0.0.0.0 on a release is correct behaviour, it's release
(as
in
give away) not re-lease (which is /renew).
Having the .128 is unusual, you want to make sure your router has the
same
mask, or adjust SBS to whatever mask the router is using. It's
unusual,
but,
as you have seen, can work.
The name going to the wrong IP is probably DNS, look in the DNS
console.
If
the ws is getting an IP from some other DHCP source it is probably not
dynamically updating it's DNS info on SBS, hence the error.

I am having some issues with the DHCP.
We are running SBS2003 Standard.
We have around four of 13 systems with this problem I'm going to
describe
to
you.
computername01:
When ping computername01 is entered from the compoter the IP is
192.168.16.26
When pinged from the server it times out and the address is
192.168.16.15
In DHCP the IP address is 192.168.16.26
Another one of our systems does the same thing but when pinged from
the
server it is grabbing an IP from local printer on our network. The
printer
is
working fine.
I have done ipconfig /flushdns, registerdns, release and renew from
computername01 and still the same IPs appear on the systems and
server.
When ipconfig /release was enetered this was displayed:
IP 0.0.0.0
SubnetMask 0.0.0.0
Doesn't it appear as if DHCP is not renewing the IPs correctly or is
there
another issue I should look at.
Below is the ipconfig of the server which when I showed it to a
friend
that
owns a networking company said that the ipconfig doesn't tell him
anything.
He did ask why my subnetmask was .128 and not 0 and I can't remember
for
the
life of me why. I think it was because the ISP assigned that subnet
mask
with
the static IP.
