So this only happens from that one laptop, and not from other machines or
when the user logs in elsewhere? I'd start by making sure the virus scanner
on the laptop is not set to scan network drives or mapped drives - in other
words, that it's not scanning anything other than local storage.
I wonder if the laptop is trying to sync files for offline use? I'd try
disabling offline file sync on the laptop in Windows Explorer and go to
Tools -> Folder Options -> Offline Files.
Other ideas: see if it happens when the laptop is started in safe mode
with networking. Use msconfig to disable all of the 3rd party
(non-Microsoft) startup applications and services. If the problem doesn't
happen, start enabling things until you find the one that's causing the
issue.

Hi,
We are running a Windows SBS2003 SP1 server acting as a file and
exchange server. We recently started seeing the server going
unresponsive, the shares would be unavailable and sometimes, but not
always, exchange would stop taking SMTP mail. Any attempt to login via
remote desktop timed out and any attempt from console would freeze at
'Applying computer setting'. The only way out would be a power off
reload of the server.
We would examine the logs but no events of any real substance would be
logged. We subsequently found that it was one particular users laptop
(running XP SP2) which when accessing one of the shares would cause
this event.
So far we've fixed it by giving that user another workstation :)
Any ideas anyone?
TIA
.
