We have a complex task ahead of us. Current Setup is
5 Geographic Sites
SBS2003 Std with Schema Update for R2 - Site1
W2K3 R2a DC - Site2
W2K3 R2a DC - Site3
W2K3 R2a DC - Site4
W2K3 R2a DC - Site5
DNS on all servers
Main server SBS2003 has unstable hardware so I wouldn't like to install
Transition Pack and make my life even more stressfull if and when things
go
horribly wrong (I read the newsgroups).
We are buying the client new server which Windows2003 STD R2 and Exchange
2003 will be installed onto.
Plan is to
1) Add new Win2k3 server to the SBS domain and promote to be DCs.
Install DNS and WINS.
2) Install Exch 2k3 to new server as an additional server in the
Exchange site.
3) Migrate the shares, data, and business related apps across from the SBS
server to the Win2k3 server.
4) Migrate the Exchange mailboxes and public folders from the SBS Exchange
to the new Exchange server.
5) Prepare for the old Exchnage server to be removed as per the MS "remove
the first Exchange Server" guidelines.
6) Power off the SBS server.
7) Seize the FSMO roles to one of the new servers.
8) Use NTDSUTIL etc to clean up references to the SBS server.
Will there be any implication to the Schema's or AD if SBS is just taken
out
like this?
Will there be an issue removing Exchange from the SBS server? issues like
keys and settings for the domain.
I would like to hear from anyone who has done this before and what issues
and resolutions they came across.
