I know what an so is, I was wondering what you included in it. For example,
just the system drive or a.so some shares on other (data) drives...

For ISO I mean a disk image of the current install. Software would be
like Norton Ghost, WinImage or something similar and create a restore
disk or image. I would then create a virtual machine that can hold the
install. Once launch the virtual machine, it acts just like a normal
bootup so you can install the image as you would on a normal
computer.
This is great for configuration tests and the like. I would not rely
on speed tests or hardware tests since the VM uses only a fraction of
the computers resources and it emulates the hardware. So the
underlying hardware is transparent to the OS running on the VM. . The
great part is I can test my linux boxes and windows boxes on the same
machine.
Microsoft also has Virtual PC which is simaler software
