Re: DHCP and remote access problem

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Hi Les,

I checked the WINS, there is nothing in there. I will check out the KB
article. Can I disable RWW since I am not using VPN or Dial-up, instead we
have the .mail route where we can access the network remotly. Or is that the
same thing?

I am looking in the DNS, I see all the computers and IPs all Host A. I then
go into the reverse lookup zones and under the subnet there are pointers to
only some of our systems. It doesn't seem right. In properties under IP
address 192.168.16.2 it says the fully qualified domain name is
2.16.168.192.in-addr.arpa.

I noticed in DHCP that some of our systems display under name - username.
Some display username.couragesafetysystems.local Can I change this?

Yes, it is a long name couragesafetysystems.local I don't suppose there is
anything I can do about that now though.

the primary DNS suffix is missing for some reason. It should be the same
as the domain, in your case couragesafetysystems.local. Or, is that an
illegally long name? - seems to me there might be an issue there but I
can't recall what (aside from huge inconvenience).

when you do a reinstall, a nice domain name would be css.local ;-).

Les,

No we are not connected VPN or dial-up.
Can I rerun CEICW with the users logged in to the network?

This is from an affected computer I can ping. Notice it says 192.168.21,
but
when I ping from the server it pings 192.168.16.20

The phone icon is RRAS, as if you'd connected via VPN or dialup. Is that
being done? Perhaps post an ipconfig from an affected workstation.

Try kb 292822, you don't need the hotfix mentioned there, but do the
regedits.

I'd also run the 'configure remote access' wizard from the todo list,
and
run CEICW again. Do an ipconfig/release and /renew from the
workstations,
and see if they get a normal lan address instead of one out of the RRAS
pool.

I noticed a problem using the company intranet to login remotely to
some of
the computers here on our network. Some of the systems we can log into
and
others we can't.

I then noticed when I ping the computers that aren't allowing the
remote
access that the IP address is different than what I see under DHCP, or
I
cannot ping at all.

I then noticed on these systems in the DHCP console that the computer
name
is listed with an IP address, and there are also other IP address that
are
in
DHCP that the system pings when using ping. These IP address are
strange
looking since next to the IP address is an icon with what looks like a
system
and a small yellow phone or something, along with an arrow. These are
the
troubled IPs that when I ping, it comes up with the iconed ones. Some
don't
even allow me to ping the computer at all.

Say computer xyz01 when pinging says 192.168.16.33
In the DHCP the 192.168.16.33 has the strange icon next to it
Then there is a seperate IP for xyz01 with a computer next to it that
says
192.168.16.18 (which I assume would be the correct IP address).

I tried ipconfig /release and renew from the client computer and no
go.

Below is the IPCONGIG/all
Is it supposed to say DHCP enabled YES?

Is there a way to flush or reset the DHCPs?
Thanks,
Greg
