Re: DNS failing on SBS2003

Hello Mike,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your post, I understand that you found that you receive
Hardware error when ping a computer from the SBS Server while other
computers can ping and the DNS can not work. If I am off-base on that,
please let me know.

The DNS can not work because the SBS network does not work.

Regarding the problem about Hardware Error, I suspect that there is a
hardware problem. However, let's first check it as following:

1. Please check if the Hardware Error message occurs when you PING any
computers in the LAN or only when you ping a specific computer.
2. Please check if all the client computers can ping the SBS Server's LAN
IP address when the problem happen.

Please install the Network Monitor (Add/remove Windows
Components\Management and monitoring tools), run the application, monitor
the LAN interface (You can select Capture -> Network, select the LAN
interface), then use PING to repro the issue. Stop the Network Monitor,
email me the network trace log.

Then please download the Network Edition of MPS_Report tool from
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE, run it on the SBS Server. Email me the
%COMPUTERNAME%_MPSReports_.CAB file which is under the
%systemroot%\MPSReports\Setup\Lite\Cab directory.

You can send the files to me at v-terliu@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Additional Info:

Generally, this issue may occur if

1. Invalid Routing Table.
2. Corrupted TCP/IP stack.
3. Failed NIC.

We may need to:
1. Check the routing table for mis-configured routes. Specifically, look
for a route that may point to a host rather than to a network.

2. There may be problems with the TCP/IP stack where it will have to be
removed and reinstalled. Ensure the machine is rebooted after TCP/IP is
removed. To reinstall TCP/IP on SBS Server 2003, please refer to following
article:

325356 How to remove and reinstall TCP/IP on a Windows Server 2003 domain
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=325356

3. If the steps above and reinstalling TCP/IP does not help, it may be a
problem of the NIC. I suggest you replace a NIC and check how everything is
going.

NOTE: After you reinstalled TCP/IP or replaced the NIC, I suggest you
re-run the "Connect to the Internet" wizard.

Hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)
