If the system is stable in safe mode, that would indicate that the problem
is being caused by something that's disabled in safe mode. I'd look at any
drivers, particularly if something specific seems to trigger the restart.
For example, a faulty print driver could crash something only when you
print, or only when you open Printers and Faxes. There's a long list of
drivers that don't load in safe mode (I wish I could point you to a list).
You could take a look at this, which seems like not much more work than just
replacing the whole PC ; -) Seriously, it might be easier just to check
for hardware with old drivers by comparing your existing versions with the
current ones on the manufacturer's web site. You probably don't need to
look at anything like chipset drivers or anything like that - BIOS, printer,
video, and NIC are the ones I'd start with.

Thanks Dave for the Relpy.
I tried disableing non MS services with out success, and Safe mode is
stable. I'm starting to turn toward hardware. The day after posting, the
laptop booted and loggedonto the domain no problems for 3/4 of the day.
After
4pm however the restarts began.
Although hardware fault does appear to contradict the fact that the admin
can logon.
Thanks again for your reply, it is one that i had not come accross either.
Cheers,
Dave.

I've never seen anything like this before, but here's where I'd start.
I can't imagine how this could be related to the SBS or domain. The
first
thing I'd do is to verify that by logging into the laptop while
disconnected
from the LAN. Don't do anything differently from what you're doing now
when
it restarts, except do it while disconnected (including wireless). The
laptop will log in using cached credentials, and if it restarts, you'll
know
the problem is local to the laptop.
Go into MSCONFIG and, in addition to setting all of the startup apps not
to
start, disable all of the 3rd party (non-Microsoft) services. If it
doesn't
reboot, start enabling services until you determine which is the culprit.
Does the problem happen in Safe Mode? If not, that probably indicates
either a startup app or service, or a driver.
Manually run Microsoft Update to make sure the laptop is fully patched.
Check the manufacturer's support web site to see if anyone else is
reporting
this. Check for BIOS and driver updates. If they have a hard drive or
RAM
testing tool, download and run that. (I suspect that if RAM were
involved,
the restarts would happen more randomly). You could try running a chkdsk
/r
on the drive to see what it reports, but if there's a drive diag tool,
I'd
run that too.

Screnario:
User is logging onto the domain on his laptop. just after the desktop
has
loaded it reboots - no BSOD, auto restart disabled.
On restart, laptop proceeds through Check Disk.
Logon as Administrator - no problems. Access the log files - no
entries.
MSConfig reduced the startup to absolute basic, logged on as user -
restart
after desktop loads and the chkdsk once again.
Copy made of users documents on the laptop. User profile then deleted
from
the laptop and recreated at next logon.
Initial logon perfect, no problems. Second logon, back to reboot after
desktop loaded.
Any assistance would be most appreciated.
