Claus is spot on.
The only thing that I would add is that out-of-the-box exchange is
configured to generate non-delivery reports (someone sends an email to your
domain for an account that doesn't exist and exchange generates a NDR to
inform the sender). Spammers can and do use this feature to delivery spam -
they send spam to your server but with the delivery address of their
intended victim, your server then generates a non delivery report and
delivers the spam to the end victim.
You probably don't need to worry about this straight away, but its likely to
become a problem within a matter of weeks. To avoid this I'd suggest reading
http://support.microsoft.com:80/kb/909005 or
www.cryer.co.uk/brian/msexchange/exch_disable_ndrs.htm.
Otherwise having email delivered directly to your SBS box should be quite
safe.

Who ever told you that doesn't know what he/she is talking about. The
Exchange server is configured out of the box not to relay. So unless you
change that configuration you are fine. What some folks do is to purchase
a service where your email gets filtered first before it's being send to
your server. Those services filter spam and viruses. Some people swear by
it. I believe that a proper configuration of the exchange server, combined
with some good third party antivirus/antispam tool will do just fine.

Hello,
I am switching from using a pop connection to my ISP to having the mail
delivered directly to my SBS2003 box. The box sits behind a firewall and
I
know that I'll have to port 25 to the SBS server. My question is this,
someone told me that I should build and install an email relay server and
place it in the DMZ zone of the firewall. They said this will prevent
someone
from sending bulk email out through my exchange server and possibly
having it
black listed.
I can't believe that Microsoft has not thought of this and doesn't have
safe
guards in place to prevent something like this from happening. I am
running
Trendmicro's latest version of Client Server Messaging Security for Small
&
Medium Business. I would think that shutting down the open relay should
prevent that from happening and the Trendmicro should handle all the
spam.
Should I do a relay server or is having the email coming directly into
the
SBS box a safe solution? Thank you in advance for your input.
