RE: Roaming profiles - not initialising

Hello Ray,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that user account can not user
roaming profile when they logon to they own computer. If I have
misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research, when a user with a roaming profile logs on to a
computer running Windows, the system checks whether the cached locally
profile is more recent than the roaming profile. In that case, the system
doesn't need to reload the profile from the central server. This check is
based only on the "last write time" of the user's registry hive Ntuser.dat.

So the user will logon local profile instead of roaming profile. I suggest
we try the following steps to see if we can resolve this issue:

1. Please try to backup the local profile for the domain user:

Roaming Profile Creation in Windows Using the "Copy To" Command
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=243420

2. Then delete the local profile:

a. Log on this client with local administrator.

b. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then
double-click System.

c. On the User Profiles tab, click the local profile for the domain user,
and then click Delete.

d. Restart the client and logon the domain user to test.

If we can not resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
kindly help me collect some information for further investigation:

Use the Networking MPS report to capture the client computer networking
configurations for further analysis:

a. Download MPSrepot_network from
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE

b. Run MPSRPT_NETWORK.exe on the server box.

c. The tool will automatically collect the information. This procedure will
take 10~15 minutes.

d. Open Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder:
%SystemRoot%\MPSReports\Network\Reports\Cab\

e. Send the .cab file directly to me at v-terliu@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

| Hi Everyone
|
| I have a Small Business Server 2003 R2 which has been running perfectly
up to
| now.
|
| Decided to go to roaming profiles for the first time so carried out the
| following:
|
| 1:- created a shared folder on the server called profiles and set the
| necessary permissions
|
| 1:- opened each user account and set the following path
\\servername\profiles\
| %username% int the profiles tab.
|
|
| 2:- log off and on twice to initialise the roaming profile for each user
on
| their own computer where their local profiles is stored.
|
| Nothing happened.
|
| Checked the profile on the local computer and it still said it was
â??localâ??
| with the â??roaming optionâ?? greyed out
|
| So I tried logging onto the computer in a another name (who had never
logged
| onto the computer at all) and presto worked fine â?? user folder created
in the
| profiles folder on the server and the profile on the local computer now
says
| â??roamingâ??
|
| I then logged onto another computer with this user (again not logged on
| before onto this machine) and again it worked fine - saw thier desktop.
|
| So the final stage was to logon with an existing user (again onto a
computer
| that they had not logged on before), again the profile was created and
| roaming. Then I logged onto their usual compute to try to o synchronise
the
| new roaming profile with their existing local profile â?? but nothing
happened
| â?? stayed as local.
|
| I cannot seem o find out what is happening.
|
| I do not think it is the server as it a new user works fine â?? it seems
tyo
| be the existing local profiles on the client computers
|
| Any help would be appreciated.
|
| BTW â?? I do not get any errors at all â?? I have even tried under
Administration
| mode â?? all user either have administration or power user rights.
|
| Thanks for your help
|
| Ray
