Hi,
I have recently been called in to have a look at a company's network
because they are experiencing a lot of freezing of the computers.
Looking at the task manager the svchost.exe process is taking all the
CPU time.
It's most likely Windows Update going bonkers. Try setting the service for
Automatic Updates & BITS to manual, stop the services, reboot the computer,
restart the services, and resetting them to automatic. I don't know if that
works, but I read it in a NG post....
Also check out http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916089/en-us - there's a
hotfix. You have to call for hotfixes, but you don't have to*pay* for the
call.
This happens mainly when using Outlook but does happen when
trying to run windows updates and other things as well.
Their current setup is:
SBS Premium with ISA setup and all traffic going through the server
Machines are Win XP with Office 2003
They use McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise Edition 8.0.0 which is
administered from the server.
On my initial check I have found that one laptop is fine and is
running Win XP pro with only Service Pack 1 and Outlook XP. The
remaining computers I saw were on SP2 XP Pro and Outlook 2003.
I am not very well up on ISA, as most of my clients use the standard
edition of SBS, but I noticed that the client PC's cannot ping
internet address's but can access them via internet explorer. E.g. a
ping to Google will time out but you can access Google in the
browser. On the server however you can ping internet sites. I am
thinking ISA is blocking traffic and causing a problem. IS there an
easy way I can disable just to test this theory?
Dunno, but it isn't likely relevant.
Recently they had a new accounts package installed on the server
moving from sage to Pegasus accounts and after this they started to
experience problems. My initial thought was that with 25 client pc's
that may be they were overloading the server with having SQL server
and exchange on the same machine. Now I think may be they might have
updated some of the programs and settings on the server, causing the
problem that is now happening.
As it is SBS SP1 they are using the server updates services to push
out windows updates.
SUS? or WSUS? Anyway, check the hotfix. And you might google for
"svchost.exe" "automatic updates" CPU 100%
At the moment the machines aren't updating and
the machines hand with the svchost.exe taking up all the CPU time
when you try and access windows update site. Occasionally you can get
through to the updates and the machine need 71 critical updates. On 1
machine I did manage to get it to download a couple of updates, but
then it refused to do it again.
I have ran 2 different virus scans and 2 different spyware scan on a
number of the machines and nothing other than tracking cookies came
up, and seeing as it seems to be happening on all but one of the
machines I don't think that is a problem.
Nope - it isn't.
The only way I have managed to prevent the problem was by running in
safe mode and then outlook and internet explorer ran fine. Also I
disconnected one PC from the network and it ran fine until I
reconnected it and opened up outlook and it asked me to log in, as
soon as I did that, the svchost.exe process took all the CPU time
again.
Sorry for the length of this post and ideas would be very much
appreciated and apologies if I have left out any details.
Regards
Tom
