RE: RWW Issues w/SBS2003

Hello Paul,

Thank you for kind update.

For there are multi issues on your SBS, we have to resolve them one by one,
but not together.

From your problem description, the reinstallation of RWW may corrupt for
some reasons. If you like, you can try to re-install the service packs in
order, as you said, starting with Win Server 2003 SP1, SBS SP1 and then R2
again. Meanwhile, I'd like to give you my suggestions:

For you could not access the OWA website and you receive the following
error event: 2214.

As the event error event indicates the problem is related with sbsflt.dll,
I would like to give the following troubleshooting steps first.

1. Can you locate the folder 'C:\Inetpub\sbsflt'? Are the files sbsflt.dll
& shrptflt.dll in this folder?

2. The sbsflt.dll & shrptflt.dll and C:\Inetpub\sbsflt folder should
receive the inherited permission from the C:\Inetpub folder. Please ensure
the permission for it by comparing with the following information

Administrator - Full Control
Creator Owner - Special permissions
Interactive - Special permissions, List Folder Contents
Network - Special permissions, List Folder Contents
System - Full Control
Users - Read&Execute, List Folder Contents, Read, Special Permissions

3. Bring up IIS manager by running Inetmgr, expand 'Web Sites', and then
right click Default website to choose Properties, switch to the 'ISAPI
Filters' tab, there should be 2 filter items listed:

" SBSFLT
" Fpexedll.dll
" OwaLogon

4. Please copy a sbsflt.dll from a good SBS system to replace the current
file. Restart the IIS service. Could this issue be resolved?

If the problem even persists, please collect following information for the
further troubleshooting and send them to me at v-terliu@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

1. Please let me know the exact error message when you try to access the OWA

2. Please send me the IIS logs when the problem is reproduced

a. Open Internet Information Services (IIS) console <Server name> right
click 'Default Web Site' to choose 'Properties'.
b. Under the 'Web Site' tab, check the option 'Enable Logging'.
c. With 'W3C Extended Log File Format', click 'Properties'.
d. Under 'General Properties', make sure 'Use local time for file naming
and rollover' is CHECKED.
e. Switch to the 'Extended Properties', and then select to enable All the
logging Options.
f. Click OK to apply the modification.
g. By Default, the log files are created in the
'%systemroot%\system32\logfiles\W3SVC1' folder.
Note that to gather the completed log, you will need to first Stop 'Default
Web Site', copy out or zip the log, and then restart the 'Default Web Site'.

3. Please send me the IIS metabase

a. Install .NET Framework Version 1.1:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=262d25e3-f589-4842-
8157-034d1e7cf3a3&DisplayLang=en
b. Install MBExplorer by installing IIS 6 Resource Kit Tools:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=56FC92EE-A71A-4C73-
B628-ADE629C89499&displaylang=en
c. Once it is installed, access it from Start, Programs, IIS Resources,
Metabase Explorer.
d. In the left pane, right click 'LM' (under your server computer name) to
choose 'Export to file', and then save it as SBSIIS.mbk.
e. Compress this mbk file, and send it to me for analysis.

4. Please send me the MPS report.

a. Visit
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE. to download the file.
b. Run the MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE on the server box.
c. Wait for 10~15 minutes.
d. Open Windows explorer, navigate to
%SYSTEMROOT%\MPSReports\Network\Reports\cab\
e. Send the .cab file directly to me.

Hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

| Hey Terence,
|
| Thanks for checking out the metabase! I was actually wondering about
this
| since mine was set to 2.0. Will change this and also correct the port
rules
| on the hardware firewall per your suggestion. Well, I have GOOD news and
BAD
| news after working through the steps last night:
|
| GOOD NEWS:
| I think I've isolated the XP client desktop connectivity problem! Tried
to
| telnet from SBS to the XP client on port 3389 as you suggested and could
not
| connect. This lead me to dig deeper - tried to ping, finger, etc. No
luck
| either. I could, however, ping/telnet/etc. from the XP client to SBS. I
| rechecked rules on the internal wireless router/firewall to ensure no
| protocols were being blocked (wireless clients are on a different sub net
| from the SBS box). Everything looked fine.
|
| Then I took a closer look at the Windows firewall on the XP client w/SP2.

| Everything points to this blocking the connections, since other services
| can't connect either (e.g., drive mapping from SBS to XP client, ping,
remote
| assistance, remote registry, etc). The SP2 Windows firewall permits
outbound
| traffic, but blocks virtually everything inbound. Couldn't disable the
SP2
| firewall either due to group policy.
|
| I found several articles on MSFT support site that I think will fix this
| issue (e.g., KB872769 and KB873449). Looks like the Group Policy in
SBS2003
| disables Windows Firewall for XP Pro client computers, and SP2 clearly
| requires group policy settings to receive connections from the LAN. I
did
| look at the rules and it appears that a GPO rule is present to allow 3389
| inbound, so it's a little strange. For anyone reading this, the other
| articles don't have KB article numbers but are titled: 1) "How to
Configure
| Windows Firewall in a Small Business Environment Using Group Policy", and
2)
| "Managing Windows XP Service Pack 2 Features Using Group Policy".
|
| BAD NEWS:
| SBS2003 box is hosed now! :[ Here's what happened: I removed and
| re-installed the Server Tools component as you suggested. Problem is, a
| message box popped up at the end warning that Windows might not function
| correctly since a newer file was overwritten during the re-install. It
| provided a link to download 2003 SP1. Nonetheless, I re-ran CEICW,
rebooted
| and got a series of application errors (e.g., W3SVC-WP: 2214, W3SVC-WP:
2268,
| Windows SharePoint Services 2.0: 1000) and system error W3SVC: 1007.
| SharePoint, Companyweb, RWW, OWA and R2 WUS all stopped working. Tried
the
| following:
|
| 1. Re-installed SharePoint SP2 - didn't help
| 2. Removed Intranet component only and re-installed - didn't help
| 3. Re-ran CEICW - didn't help
| 4. Re-installed R2 update - didn't help
|
| Still get a string of W3SVC and SharePoint application errors. At this
| point, I decided the only way to fix this would be to re-install the
service
| packs in order, starting with Win Server 2003 SP1, SBS SP1 and then R2
again.
| I was afraid that if I restored SharePoint instead from a recent backup
it
| would leave exactly where I started, with the components not working.
Also,
| there was no guarantee that something else wasn't still missing too.
|
| I launched Win Server 2003 SP1 and got almost all the way through when it
| FAILED! And that's where things are now. Have not re-booted the box
since
| the last time something like this happened, I could not fix the problem.
| Could not uninstall the failed SP1 installation since it could not find
an
| uninstall path, could not re-install either, and could not put on
subsequent
| svc packs. What a mess! What do you think I should try at this point?
