ok, i think we may be onto somehting here Susan....
That registry key does not exist on my system.
when i couldnt find it where it's supposed to be I did a search for
"servicepacknumber" in the registry and it only apears here:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\ServicePackNumber
the value is 0x00000002(2)
(so i guess i'm definately on Exchange SP2)
should I reinstall SBS SP2????

What value is there?
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SmallBusinessServer\ServicePackNumber

I saw this fix mentioned in another post too. so i thought i'd try it after
your recomendation
I tried to install the 5th service pack of SBS sp1, it said it couldnt
install it without the 4th service pack installed.
so i backedup my system state, and installed the 4th service pack (being the
patch for the server to distribute win xp service pack 2 to clients) even
though sbs sp2 techincally already has this installed
this got almost all the way through and then failed, saying there were no
more files avaliable to install, i then got a warning from the update
installer that SBS active directory may now not function normally.
after the error i tried the 5th service pack again, still wouldnt install.
so i've rolled back to the system state before these half installed updates
and am back to where i started basically.
this is so frustrating.
i've actually mannaged to connect my vista client to the shares and
exchange, but everything else the vista compatibility pack achieves is still
an issue... such as the GPO for vista clients and other backend functions.
(and god knows what else they put in there)
what to do what to do?
P.S. I really appreciate your help with this Susan

Can you redo the last (fifth) service pack of SBS sp1 on that box again
and see if that kicks it?

Exchange SP2
at least i'm pretty sure it's sp2, the SP2 update is not listed in
add/remove progs, or in Microsoft Update History,
but all the automatic updates that have been applied are listed as being for
exhange 2003 SP2.
Exchange System Manager reports exchange version as 6.5.7638.1
(sorry about being a bit vague, i'm a bit new to this)

Can you check if you have either Exchange sp1 or sp2 on that box?<br>

<pre wrap="">Having some problems connecting a new computer to our SBS 2003 server.
First step was to install the patch for SBS 2003.
I am trying to install the "Windows Small Business Server 2003:

"</a>This update cannot be installed. Either it is already installed as
part of an existing service pack, or it requires a more recent service
pack.

This is on a fully patched (Windows update and Microsoft update) SBS
2003 WITH SERVICE PACK 2
(I never installed service pack 1, but I'm pretty sure it was already on the
machine when i got it as i only purchased it about 8 months ago)
the requirements of the update state that it requires SP1 but makes no
mention of SP2...
KB926505 does not appear in the Control Panel as a removable item
and the new Group Policy templates do not appear either.
I've checked my updates history and found a few minor failed updates which I
have manually reinstalled. this made no difference.
I've found some posts on a few forums referencing that in some circumstances
SP1 installation "didnt take" and that reinstalling the SBS2003 SP1 solved
the problem.
But i never had SP1 (at least i dont think i did, it's not in add/remove
programs) only SP2.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Thankyou
