Ops, sorry. I misunderstood the question.
Installing SQL Server does not remove MSDE. It will do a parallel install.

Just make sure when you go through the uninstall part of MSDE, you uninstall the SharePoint instance "ONLY" and not the one that says MSSQL$SBSMONITORING. That one should remain on MSDE because it does not support SQL Server

Will this leave the existing MSDE instances alone, or upgrade them to SQL? I'm not using MSDE for anything beyond SBS/Sharepoint (WSS 2). Would love to have everything in SQL, but am mainly concerned with not mucking around with a functioning Sharepoint.
