If your only need is to be able to read a Word doc on the server, just
install the Word viewer. No Office or Word license needed. Same goes for
Excel and PowerPoint.

You have a choice. It may not be necessary, but since some docs are saved
directly on the servers, e.g. downloaded tools which may be Word,for
server administration, you need office to read them, thus you can load it
on the server
