Hello MMJII,
Thank you for posting here.
According to your description, I understand that you want to encrypt the
data on the SBS hard disk. If I have misunderstood the problem, please
don't hesitate to let me know.
Based on my research, we can use Encrypting File System to encrypt files or
folders and it will not cost large amount of overhead to CPU. I suggest we
try the following steps to see if we can resolve this issue:
How to Use Microsoft Windows Explorer to Encrypt a Folder or a File
1. Click Start, point to Programs, click Accessories, and then click
Windows Explorer.
2. Right-click the folder or the file that you want to encrypt, and then
click Properties.
3. Click the General tab, and then click Advanced.
4. Click to select the Encrypt contents to secure data check box, and then
click OK.
5. Click OK.
6. After you are prompted to choose either to encrypt the folder and all
its contents or to encrypt only the folder itself, specify the folder and
its contents, and then click OK.
NOTE: If the folder is empty, encrypt only the folder.
7. Click OK.
How to Use Microsoft Windows Explorer to Decrypt a Folder or a File
1. Click Start, point to Programs, click Accessories, and then click
Windows Explorer.
2. Right-click the folder or the file that you want to decrypt, and then
click Properties.
3. Click the General tab, and then click Advanced.
4. Click to clear the Encrypt contents to secure data check box, and then
click OK.
5. Click OK.
6. After you are prompted to choose either to decrypt the folder and all
its contents or to decrypt only the folder itself, specify the folder and
its contents, and then click OK.
NOTE: The default setting decrypts the folder only.

| Hello All,
| It seems that sooner or later someone is going to get at your data no
matter
| how vigilant you are, so you might as well make the data unreadable to the
| general population.
| Just trying to get some input on data encryption on 2K3 SBS
|
| 1. Is it worth it?
| 2. Does it add a large amount of overhead to cpu, etc.?
| 3. Other info KB article, real world experience with Windows data
| encryption.
|
| I have Dell Poweredge 830 Pentium D Dual core 3.0 Ghz with 2 GB ram 2x 250
| SATA drive in RAID 1 config
| We would be encypting close to 35 GB of production data, and 10 GB of
| archive data for realtime access.

| Thanks for any thoughts ideas, suggestions.
