Thanks Mark,

On the General tab of the Properties dialog, Compress drive to save disk
space is not selected. Is that what you mean? I know that I did not select
to compress the drive when I formatted it.

I just verified what is selected/de-selected by default. The compress
feature is not selected.

Backups have been running fine until this week, so it has me a little
stumped/miffed/worried.

Jim,

Make sure that you turn off compression on the USB drive. When you
reformatted the USB drive you probably turned on compression. I just had
the
same problem and it took me months to figure it out. I reformatted my USB
drive without compression and have have not had an error since.

My nightly backups have been failing for the past four days. I get 8009
and
8017 in the log. Yesterday, I formatted one of my two external USB backup
drives and ran a manual backup successfully. The successful backup log is
below under Backup Success. Last night's backup failed with the details
below under Backup Failure. Prior to this, backups have been running
fine. I
have been installing all the recent updates. Is one of these updates a
problem? I have 1.8GB free space available on my OS partition. Is this
not
enough? The USB drive gets the dreaded Red Light of Death and I have to
shut
her down.

Event ID 8017 - NTBackup error: 'An inconsistency was encountered in the
requested backup file.'

I moved the backup job to 2:30 a.m. instead of 3:00 a.m. Didn't help.

SBS 2003 R2/SP2, ISA 2004, SQL 2005, Trend Micro CSM Security, etc.

KB928517, dated February 9, 2007 says:
. Configure the backup jobs to run after all other jobs have been
completed. (what's running at 2:30 a.m.?)
. Use a different backup device, such as a tape backup device.
(don't
want to go to tape)
. Use a third-party backup software program to back up files to the
removable drive. ($$)
