Backup fails with error 'Unable to open "D:\" - skipped.'

I have been using the SBS2003 backup utility for nearly a year
without significant problems with the backup set being written to a
local NAS drive. About three weeks ago when it started refusing to
backup the second disc drive(D:) reporting it was invalid.
After several failures I forced it to write the backup onto the D
drive, its 360GB and almost empty.
Initially it did so successfully then it started giving the error
shown until for the last week it has failed to backup successfully.
I would like to get backup working, preferably with the NAS drive.
I have chkdsk'ed both discs with no errors and defragged then also.
The NIC have the latest drivers I can find and the NAS is running the
most up to date firmware (its a Terastation 1Tb Pro)
As it takes over seven hours to complete a full backup its takes time
to try out changes especially as if I backup just the D drive this
works without problems.
Any suggestions?
