I know, bad form to reply to myself, but....GOOD NEWS (mostly).

While searching the web with Google using the search term "reinstall
Companyweb files" I ran across this:
http://www.smallbizserver.net/Default.aspx?tabid=53&view=topic&postid=36959&forumid=12
(I suppose I'm starting to feel like "paying up")

Now, what was being talked about was ISAPI filters and the SBSFLT
folder. It took me a minute to figure out what they were talking about,
and where these dialog boxes were. I finally found it under "Internet
Information Services" while browsing Services and Applications. There it
was - IIS/Web Sites. and everything was stopped.

I manually started Default Web Site, Sharepoint Administration,
Sharepoint Central Administration, and companyweb. The effect was that
company web works, OWA works, Remote Access works, and the missing pages
in Server Management reappeared.

So, I'm guessing the message I got during a restart after installing ISA
about a service being unable to start was the IIS service.

This leaves the SSL e-mail problem (as far as I know).
