Exchange <> SMTP.

There is a native SMTP server that will do quite nicely for notifications.

Which doesn't change my opinion that it's a bad idea to do what he's suggesting.

Oh lets see. What about monitoring, reporting, and alerts? Sharepoint Alerts?, Fax?, SBS Backup failure notofocations? I'm sure I overlooked something else that expects smtp and Exchange.

Of course Installing Exchange and actually having the users use it are two different things.
