Re: VPN Error 800 - Again

I just saw this in passing, while looking for something else, your first
post made me jump, and I needed to reply.
I'm betting your using a Linksys wrt54G, rev 3+?
Linksys has always had issues with pptp (GRE 47) passthrough, breaking
and repairing it with every version, and while the older befsr41's
seemed to have their firmware patched long ago, the new WRT54G, and
WRT54GS at least, have once again broken pptp passthrough at least with
firmware revs 2 months old.

I just finished going through the same hassle here, Configured a new
hire sales persons laptop, send them, it, and a new firewall router
home and they couldn't connect, error 800, brought the unit back,
flashed the routers firmware, tested internally, no problem, sent it
back home, no go. The attempt shows in the log, the router just isn't
passing GRE back, and the connection times out. I always loved linksys,
but I also deployed 3 other machines, with the same routers, and the
same error 800 at the same time.....

2 solutions:
1: fry the linksys router with dd-wrt firmware, more features, better
control, and no gre passthrough problem, also solves the linksys max
active ports issues which can cause the router to lock up.

2: what I did internally was to take the batch of routers (15 of them)
back to the store, and replace them with cheap D-link wireless routers,
no GRE problems, saved $20 a router, picked up a new flat panel for my
servers ;) and haven't had a problem yet.

If you go the route of option 1, if it is a wrt54G ver 5+ there are
special flashing instructions for the firmware. I still deploy linksys
for client sites, with DD-wrt firmware, makes a cheap and robust vpn
endpoint with many many features for much less than anything else on
the market.

Hope this helps, Quick verification if its the router, bypass it and go
directly to the internet connection, I'm betting VPN success. (took me 3
days and 2 routers to finally try that).

Good Luck!
