Re: OK to install SBS 2003 R2 Premium over SBS 2003 Standard?

Hi Al

I just found this and your reference to nit-picking. Let me assure you that
I am very grateful for your help and I wasn't picking nits! :')

You can upgrade SBS 2003 SP1 to R2, but you'd need to do an upgrade
install of your system AFAIK (backup first). After that, you'd add on the
"Premium technologies". I think it will work, but I am unclear whether
the switch from SBS Standard to Premium during the upgrade is supported.
It should be, as Premium is usually just an "add-on" after the standard
install. Maybe check the MS site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/upgrade/default.mspx

You may want to wait to see if one of the "MVP's" will actually answer
your original question rather than just nit-pick my well-intentioned
responses.

Thanks to everybody who responded.

I am still not sure - are you saying that a full install of R2 over my R1
(?) will or will not lose my config and data?

Thanks

well I'd say adding ISA server to your network is a huge security
advantage...

Premium does not have any more security features per se, it just adds
on full SQLServer and ISAServer. If you are using a proper internet
firewall for security then you don't need ISA (though it does work
well).

Normally you can just upgrade from standard to premium by buying the
upgrade CD and installing SQL and (optionally) ISA from it. In your
case I don't think it will upgrade cleanly though because you have the
R2 release and your old version was R1. You would have to do a full
re-install.

Hello

I am basically a one-man business working with a couple of freelancers
on an ad hoc project basis.

I currently run an SBS 2003 Standard server that operates mainly as my
exchange server, file share with automated backup to NAS and general
plaything. I am just starting to get the hang of the potential of the
companyweb intranet in order to allow my remote colleagues to
communicate out of hours. Though configuring companyweb so each user
can only see their own live projects is proving a headache. I try to
grab time to fiddle as pressure of work allows.

One of my clients is concerned about the security of my SBS 2003
Standard server being accessable from the internet - albeit only by
using certificates. They have offered to give me a copy of SBS 2003 R2
Premium edition in return for some of my time. I understand that
Premium edition has more security features.

Can I just put in the DVD and fire up the installation? Will it
recognise the current SBS Standard and upgrade accordingly? I am
concerned that my current configuration and data (esp. Exchange) will
be wiped.

All advice very welcome.

L
