Re: Help and Support fails after SP2

I've installed it several times.

What errors are you having?

As the ones you list below I've seen even before SP2 is applied.

Since the issue is due to a SP, it should be a free call.

List the exact errors you are getting.

Same and more issues. I've spent 8 hours on this with an expensive Microsoft tech that has not yet acknowledged It's their problem!

I unintstalled SP2, but still had problems. I restored system state which I happily backed up before SP2, but still have problems. Event log shows system error 10005 DCOM got error "The dependency service or group failed to start. " attempting to start the service winmgmt with arguments "" in order to run the server: and Application error 9097 The MAD Monitoring thread was unable to connect to WMI, error '0x8004100e'.

As to 10005 I am clueless what to do. As to 9097 it says I have to re-run exchange setup.

Whatever you do, don't install this service pack!

Of course the reboot is required after the service pack but the Help and Support service was still not listed. As I pointed out in my former post the solution is what recreated the service and then reappeared in the services. I then started it manually. (It was set to automatic). Your current suggestion was tried in the beginning and as all ways after a major SP more than one reboot is recommended if things don't come back the first time. Each situation may be unique to the server's hardware and configuration. Thank you for your comment, keep up the good work.

Do a reboot after the Service pack... it should come back fine the second boot.

Hello GT
Sorry but that was not the issue.
World Wide Web Publishing Service was not the only service that did not start automatically on restart after installing SP2. The following also did not start:
NetLogon
Windows Time
Distributed Transaction Coordinator
Exchange System Attendant
Exchange Information Store
Connector for POP3 Mailboxes
Exchange MTA stacks
SQLAgent#SBSMONITORING

At the console (since Net Logon was not started) started Net Logon and Windows Time. Then remoted into server and started the other failed to start services.
"Help and Support" was NOT LISTED in the Services and therefore could not be started.

The solution was as stated in my previous post. I hope this is clearer and others who might have the same problem should try the solutions stated by others in this posting.
Thanks,
Hal

WWW Publisher Services appears to get disabled by SP2 this stops ISA admin service from running and the help and support needs this to run.

Look at your services and make sure these are running.

Happy to report the following finally worked.
Start /w helpsvc /svchost netsvcs /regserver /install

It worked after reinstalling SP2 on top of SP2 without first uninstalling SP2

Thanks for the help.

None of the above worked. Help and Support is still not listed in services.
Any more suggestions?
I think Microsoft needs to step in on this one.

If none of the suggestions do not work, uninstall/reinstall SP2.

Thanks for the info. The same thing happened on my box (SBS 2003 Premium
SP2). I'll post if there is a problem with the fix.

This solution was posted with the original thread and appears to still
apply.
Hope this will save someone else having to look.

Suggestion 1 worked to resolve my issue:

Suggestion 1. Reinstall Help and Support service.

1. From a command prompt go to the "C:\Windows\pchealth\helpctr\binaries"
folder by typing:

CD \windows\pchealth\helpctr\binaries

2. Run the following commands one by one:

Start /w helpsvc /svchost netsvcs /regserver /install
net start helpsvc

=========================

Suggestion 2. Reinstall Help and Support.

1. Open Windows Explorer.

2. Go to C:\Windows\inf folder.

3. Right click pchealth.inf and click Install.

4. If the system prompts for installation CD, please insert installation
CD
1.

5. If the system prompts for SP1 installation CD, you have to manually
create a slipstream installation CD 1.

==========================

Suggestion 3. Use SFC to check system protected files.

If the problem persists, please use SFC command to check whether there's
any corrupted system protected file.

1. Click Start and click Run.

2. Key in "SFC /scannot", then click OK.

3. The system will automatically scan the protected files.

4. Wait for the wizard to complete.

You may also need to insert the slipstream installation CD 1.

This was posted a year or so ago so I thought I would start a new
thread for
SP2 in case anyone else is also having the issue -

After installing SBS 2003 SP2 if I select Help and Support the
following
error message dialog is displayed.

"Windows cannot open Help and SUpport because a system service is not
running. To fix this problem, start the service named 'Help and
Support'"

However, I can't find such a service listed in the Services list.

Any ideas?
