Here is the issue. I have a web site set up on a seperate server that is
running Windows XP Pro. I have a redirect from my SBS 2003 Server to that. On
my SBS 2003 Server, when I type in http://localhost:81 the web site comes up.
However, when outside the LAN trying this with my static ip address and port
81, it does not come up. My HW firewall and Windows SB 2003 Firewall are set
with port 81 open. Any suggestions? I get the 404 Error message.
First, Windows XP is not, can not be, does not act like, a server. It is
a workstation that is limited to 10 connections. It is a POOR web host for
any function.
A redirect means you redirect to http://somelocation.com:81 not your
internal IP, the public people can't see your internal IP addresses, you
have to use the PUBLIC IP addresses/names.
This means that your Public DNS has to be setup properly and if you want
it to work properly INSIDE your network from your internal workstation
then you need to setup SBS DNS to see the same names that point to your
internal IP addresses.
Now, if you don't have a DMZ network then you should stop hosting the
website - it should be in your DMZ with no connection to the LAN.
